I just finished a 1987 season in a progressive, and Pat Perry had a very unusual set of statistics. In the regular season, he went 0-8 in save opportunities. In the playoffs (lost in the world series), he rounded it out by going 0-2, making a total of 0-10. Why am I giving this terrible pitcher so many opportunities?

Regular Season: 3.33/.217/1.13 in 94.7 innings
Playoffs: 3.29/.279/1.39 in 13.7 innings

Unless it was a save opportunity, he was by far my best reliever. If there ever was the appearance of a good player lacking the mystical "clutch" ability, Perry was it.

Anyone ever had a player with more than 10 BS without a completing one?

First game of the TOC - guess who blows a save?

nice!

remember that if you're a setup man, you'll never get saves, but you can still be charged with a blown save. so it's not unusual for players to be 0-for-7, 0-for-8, etc... 0-for-10 is still impressive though!

maybe he just allowed a lot of inherited runners to score when he was blowing saves.

True enough, but usually most of my setup guys will get a few saves throughout the season for one reason or another. It's to the point of being funny now.

My setup guys always get saves and closers never do. Then again, I don't use closers.

He probably drinks Dos Equis too.

If your closer has enough innings the setup guys won't get very many saves. How many BS they get is just the number of 1-3 run leads they blew...

I only wear sweater vests if they're pink, I only smoke menthol cigarettes if I'm out of Virginia Slims, and I'm smashed after a wine cooler and a half, but the boys like that so whatevs.

Wait, no, forget what I said. I was talking about some other me. I mean guy. Not me.

While we are on the subject of blown saves and set up men - I am beginning to wonder about the value of these set up men. They almost always suck.

I am thinking about never using them at all.

I've never really been sure what a setup man does. I just use closers, mopups, and Long A sometimes.

If you use long men and no setup men, then Sparky will use your long men as setup men when needed. So, it really makes no difference that way.

But Sparky will choose setup men over long men in the late innings, so I usually choose better pitchers for setup than for long relief.

Yeah, I think that is the conventional wisdom. Given a lead, the closer you are to the end of the game, the better the pitcher you want. That is why most teams' (in real life at least) best reliever is their closer.
