I believe range comes into play by turning a hit into an out (or with poor range turning an out into a hit). But I know that it turns triples into doubles or singles, doubles into singles, and vice versa. Putting a runner on first instead of second has more than a cosmetic value. Range also has an effect on double plays, which also is more than cosmetic. The key is determining whether additional double plays and fewer extra-base hits is worth the added salary cost for good-range players.
