Proxy and autopick are human and computer versions of the same thing. Proxy can only be used in a draft being done via forum posts; autopick would only be used with the online draft tool and at this time does not exist in WIS.

Requests for an autopick functionality do not mean expecting it to handle 'every pick you're scheduled to make in a draft.' It would be a way to help out owners who can't always get on at a specific time avoid losing out on a player they would have taken had he not been selected in the time between the scheduled pick and when he gets online to eventually make the pick. As far as I know, the live draft feature is used only (or almost only) for single-season theme leagues, not progressives. It would also help the entire league when an owner vanishes after entering a team in an online-draft league. Currently, if that owner never showed up, the draft would proceed with his team not making a pick, and after 575 players had been taken by the other 23 teams, WIS would fill the roster with undrafted players, and the team would be lucky to win 20 games. I have been in two leagues that had this happen, and it is not a good situation.

Another reason for a commissioner override option, Josh - missing a series of picks is bad enough in a progressive, disasterous for a one-and-done theme league.

I'm NOT that keen about loading a series of picks into an autoload queue, tho, if the live draft develops an autopick function and is adapted for progressive league use. Mentioned the Koufax/Killebrew/Herb Score scenario in another thread. My next pick in progressives, either in the inaugural draft or a regular season draft, depends a lot on who I get with the current pick. It's not just p - 1b - 3b -c. If I draft Score the rest of my draft will be filled with players who'll help me win NOW. If Killebrew or Koufax I'll draft for the future.

I'm not against serial autopicks, just that I'd never use it. Also, as I glean from the other thread's conversation, creating serial autopick functionality is a developer's nightmare.

An easier way to write this code, is to have every owner prerank the draft picks, that way if time runs out on the pick the comp would pick highest ranked player.

There are more holes in this statement than I have time to debunk...Your description of a solution covers maybe 10% of the problem. If it were that easy, it would already be done.

What if we only had to load it for the next pick, Len, rather than for an entire draft?

Len will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the idea of giving the commish override power on things in a live draft was shot down by WIS because they thought it would enable power abuse by some commish's. They didn't want to give him TOO much power...

all this seems way over my head. I have been doing open leagues since I joined WIS, and always wanted to try progressive, but feel like its too confusing. Is there a thread that explains progressive leagues and live drafts for retards?

There really isn't one thread that explains the whole thing for you. I will try to explain as simple as possible.

Progressive leagues start in a certain year we will use 1970. Usually there is a serpentine style draft 1-24, 24-1 and so on. The way I have done it is in the Forums. Each owner has 30 minutes to 1 hour to pick the player they want. 1 round per day usually, until your 25 man roster is complete.

Now that you have a team full of 1970 players the next year you keep the same team drop the players that you dont want or Injured reserve the ones that do not have a stat for 1971. Then you again start a draft this time using the players from 1971 season that are not on any owners roster.

Thats the basics.

OK that helps a lot thanks. Just a few more questions... You would need one team per each season correct? So, lets say I was apart of the 1970 progressive league, if I was apart of it the year before, do I have an automatic spot in 1971? What if I dont have money for anymore teams? I'm assuming they would replace my team with another?

Yes...you need 1 team per season and if you plan on joining a progressive you should be prepared to be a part of it for as long as it runs. You'll enjoy progressives much more than open leagues. The good ones work because there are a group of owners that are in it for the long haul.

thx for the input all, definitely plan on joining one soon. Lets hope my OL success translates to progressive. One more question, if you win your progressive league, does that team make it to the TOC? Or are progressive leagues different bc of their uniqueness?

a good proxy describes traits, not players

implied is "best player available at that draft spot"

for example

Rnd 1: 10+ yrs
Rnd 2: 10+ yrs OR 5+ yrs 150+ IP P
Rnd 3: 8+ years P OR def OF
Rnd 4: 85 IP RP or 200 PA MI
Rnd 5: 200 PA MI or 200 PA C

i am asking a lot of the sim

think, damn ye!

Yes, there are TOCs for winning teams in progressives
