Has anyone tried winnign with a team that uses like 8-10 players at 18-25 minutes per game? Essentially you can get a bunch of 3-5/6 million dollar players who were injured and only are worth like 20 mpg in the simulator but have fabulous stats. I'm thinking about trying it and was wondering what anyone thought.

I used to use and dominate with platoon squads.  I almost always had one or two players that played a lot of minutes and the rest were in rotation.  I haven't tried with the new salaries because I can't build a team that interests me in an OL.  I also have only played one non-progressive theme league since the new salaries, and it is a $57M cap (so yeah, I'm not platooning that).

Considering the partial season salaries are still underpriced, it could be a good strategy.

In the past Bird/AK-47 lineups were used at SF quite a bit as well as double Bol and sometimes double Walton.  As it seems in this version of the sim as long as you have plenty of D you should be successful since anyone will score given no real offensive talent, but D is most important.  UGH!  Much longer separate post that will explain what it is I hate in OL's now.

Hm.  The current sim engine actually really skimps on defensive impact.  Not that it has no impact, but it's been about 10th on the list of things I look for in drafting.  Maybe with the upheaval caused by the new salary structure, defense will become more relevant again.

Wow.  I have run into teams that are all 90+ DEF and they maul me, and bad defensive players almost seem to get exploited more now than before.  Plus DEF ratings are screwed up.  Magic has some crazy D numbers and I remember him having a hard time with marginal offensive PG's playing against him.  I do look at things like usage quite a bit as well as eFG (although I did that quite a bit before).  I also noticed that high FTA do not typically turn into FTA either, but I am also still trying to get my feet under me here.

the engine has changed at least 2x since you were last here.  This latest salary change has vastly changed the pecking order of things.  Defense is slightly more important... mostly because you can't afford a good offense anymore.  By good offense, I mean an offense that meets the possessions requirement while still shooting a decent efg%.

the thing Ive noticed about platoon squads is that players tend to over generate TOVs/PFs and under generate positive stats and having more players seems to exacerbate the issue

That's been my experience as well - unless I'm playing in a league in which everyone has a platoon squad, in which case it seems to even out.

Ok thanks for all the helpful info.

Also, Magic was notoriously porous on defense.

which is some bs - Magic got famously lit up by some guys like KJ who would famously light up anyone

want to see some footage of KJ dumping on Hakeem? because that pretty much proves that Hakeem was inadequate too right?

Yeah the dream sucked.

Look I am not killing Magic here.  I hate the Lakers, but was in tears the day I heard about his HIV (which back then we thought was a death sentence).  I love Magic, but he was not a great defender.  Read Simmons' pyramid segment on Magic in The Book of Basketball.  It isn't that he got lit up by KJ, but it is also lit up by a guy like Sleepy Floyd (in his years with the Rockets) and Doc Rivers.  No one (using logic) would doubt that Magic is the greatest point guard ever, but he just isn't the greatest PG.

I just hate the D ratings..Magic should not be in the 90's, and Troy Friggin Murphy should not be a top rated defender - the guy hasn't even made an all-defensive team.

true enough - he shouldnt be in the 90s but that's a world of difference from the knee jerk and factually incorrect 'notoriously porous on defense'

small fast guards were tough for him because he was 6'9" plus you dont want your best player working harder on D than he has to so more often than not Scott got the call
