Value of an A+ arm??? Topic

I've got an A/A+/A+ Joe Mauer. So far he has thrown out a whopping 14 of 64 base stealers....21.9%. We are approaching the All-Star break. Shouldn't he be doing a bit better than that? He's hitting just fine...but yikes.....

In all likeliness, yes he should be better. However his specific performance depends both on the competition and your pitchers. Also, keep in mind that there is a huge range for A+ arms-- I think from 45% to 60%. Still in my experience, even A- arms wind up with ~25% caught.

There is a big difference in the results of A+ arms 1971 Thurman Munson (61% CS) and 2002 Javy Lopez (38%).  They really should not have the same rating.

And then there are those damn Mike Piazzas with their D arms who keep throwing out my Willie McGees (78% SB success rate).    Go figure!

NOBODY steals on my `64 Roseboro.  Just finishing one $80 MM OL, and he has thrown out 23 of 37 (62%).  Hardly anyone tries and those that do get gunned down.  My team has 224 SB's v. only 45 against (only 14 against Roseboro).  Nice differential covers a multitude of other sins..

'64 Roseboro is so good that most runners are afraid to try to run on him.     I recently completed $100M theme league, and he threw out 14 of 16 runners.  That's only 16 SBA against Roseboro for the entire season!  He caught about 75% of the innnings played.  The funny thing is that both successful steals happened in the same game, and one was by a poor base runner.  (The other was Henderson.)

'64 Roseboro? I don't know what type of runners you had in these leagues but he's "gunned down" only 29 of the 108 attempt for me... nothing special there

What do you think of '75 Carter?  He is currently at 47% after about 130 games.

My fave of all time to use is '87 Mike Lavalliere.  Usually throws out a little less than half the runners trying to steal, is a pretty decent hitter, and if played right I can get better than 100 games out of him all for around $3.3M

Amy was in love with 1975 carter 2 & 3 years ago.She always said he was the best deal at catcher. Now it seams like everyone is using him.He is not bad I use him or 1974 Gene Tenace on all my teams.Great arms & good bats.

Although I rarely go with really crappy armed catchers (unless their offense is amazing or I'm stuck by the theme/league), I have found that since the last update, the arms seem to cost more than they are worth.  These days I'm happy to go with a B(ish) armed catcher who doesn't financially cripple my team and can hit the ball from time to time...  and have a defensive replacement with an A+ arm who can gun down guys when it really counts.  It's the catcher equivalent of having a really good closer.

Carter will gun down close to half the runners that face him.  He will hit .250-.280/.320-.360/.400-.450.  At $4M he is a steal and the best value catcher at mid-caps.
