one guy says ERC# is important, another says he never looks at it but he looks for OAV#, BB9# lower than RL. any other opinions?

question remains-- is ERC# more important than ERA#?

ERC is better than ERA but most people check the more specific stats (OAV, BB/9, hr/9).

I don't rely on either greatly. I'll use ERA# to compare to actual era just to see how the season normalizes but i don't rely on the number at all. I'll also use ERC+ to see how he did compared to others in that season. I put much more emphasis on whip#, hr/9+ & oav+

OAV#, BB/9#, HR/9, HR/9+

there are many different stats and some overlap between them, so there is no one right answer here. I use ERC+ to sort a long list and quickly narrow it down to a few top prospects. some people prefer ERC#, use whichever you're more comfortable with. when choosing between a few choices I look mostly at hr/9, oav, whip, oav+. whip+. raw stats and normalized stats have approx equal weight with me. low hr/9 is very important in open leagues, important in themes too though it's value varies depending on the theme. ERA isnt very important.

There are two different directions that an observation of a pitcher's stats can take you. One direction is understanding what kind of player he is and what you can expect from him. The other direction is figuring out his value relative to the price assigned to him.

Ideally, we ought to be able to trust that the creators of this game have priced each and every player in the database correctly. That is to say, they've been given an appropriate price relative to the ERA you might expect from them. So, while you'd be fooling yourself to think that the site administration has such a deep understanding of baseball statistics that they've been able to price every player correctly, they've done a reasonably good job on the vast majority of players.

My advice to you as a new player, is to go ahead and trust the pricing system for now and concentrate more on simply understanding what type of player each is. You can use $/IP as one of your sorting categories. This will give you a good idea of overall effectivness. From there, you just need to decide where you want to allocate the majority of your player's effectiveness based on the ballpark of your choice. Example: If you're playing in a +HR park, you'll want a large part of the pitcher's effectiveness to be in the area of preventing HRs.

Once you're good at doing that (and once you've established that you're having fun) do some forum searches on 'normalization' and the different stats. There's plenty of reading material out there. Just don't be frustrated if you don't understand all of it. I doubt that anybody understands everything prefectly (and if you ever submit a ticket you will realize that 'anybody' includes admin).

Always thought that era# was about extra base hits myself...though I may be wrong, I often am as I'm married.

It is but it is a minor factor.

WHIP+ has been the stat I have looked at most.

I have never looked at ERC+, #, $, %, &, *. Should I start? Maybe THEN, I can start wining.

I use ERC+, WHIP #, OAV+, BB/9+ primarily. They all play a factor in my searches. I won't let one stat dominate my decision making. I look at other stats too, but do not put as much weight into them.
