Negro League Players Topic

WIS needs to find a way to begin using Negro League players. Stratomatic online has, so why is WIS so far behind?

I'm sure they'd love to add them but to say the stats kept during the time are "innacurate at best" is a huge understatement.

It would just be made-up stats. People say Josh Gibson "supposedly" hit 800+ HR...

I'm in favor of made up stats, but I'm the only one who is, so that wouldn't fly.

Are you saying that black people can't count? Where do you get "supposedly"? From everything I have ever seen or read Josh Gibson did hit over 800 HR.

Would love to draft some early Satchel Paige seasons.. might make some of the current stud pitcher's seasons look average.

There is no published season-by-season breakdown of Gibson's home run totals in all the games he played in various leagues and exhibitions.
Plus about 2/3rds of their games were vs inferior competition.
Bonds would have hit 3000 home runs if he played 2/3 of his games vs minor league pitchers.
Even I hit 4 home runs when my kids T-ball team needed an extra player. I was gold glove Shortstop that game too. I do feel bad for kicking one kid in the shins after he caught a flyball of mine!

Boy, I come back on line to check on my proressive league draft, and I see that this argument has shown up again.

You want Negro league players, you can have them. Please provide authoritative, accurate, year-by-year stats for each of the Negro league teams playing only against other Negro league teams. No exhibitions against factory teams, semi-pro clubs, or minor leaguers included in the totals, please.

Nobody who has any brains doubts that some very good players played in the Negro leagues. Heck, I've visited Josh Gibson's gravesite (Pittsburgh, Allegheny Cemetary). But no source of reliable stats exist for the Negro Leagues.

Hvbbl: "Over 800 HR's". That's what it says on Gibson's HOF plaque. But tell me how many he hit in 1939? And what his batting average was that year, and how many times he walked.... Oh yeah, how was his fielding? And what was the league average so we can normalize him correctly.... Nobody says that blacks can't count, but the Negro leagues weren't exactly organized to modern standards, and the Pittsburgh Courier (the nations largest circulating black paper) didn't print all the box scores... Or even most of them.

maybe they could add the Negro League players with the stats they have (innacurate as they may be) and only allow them in Theme Leagues or something? Would love to get Satchel and Josh as my team's battery, that is for SURE!!!!

Great point BigLen, but how does stratomatic do this? What stats do they use? Just wondering, maybe it is impossible.

I remember a few years ago someone put together a negro league theme that used most of the negro players from the 50's and 60's and then added earlier players like Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Oscar Charlston etc. What admin did was change the names of real players like Ruth and Mathewson to Gibson and Paige. It was quite interesting, but it only happened once that I know of. I wish I could remember who put together that theme.

Since this is "What If Sports" I'm suprised they don't add the negro league or japanese players as an option. That would be a great "What If."

I also had an idea (maybe a stupid one) that WIS should allow you to create one player on your team, put in whatever stats you want, and name him whatever you want. They could then use the formula (same one as they do for the REAL players) to assign a monetary value to the player. SO, if you get silly and give a guy a .450 avg and 85 hr, his value might be 25 million. You could still use him, but he would eat up a huge amount of your payroll.

I know this will never happen, but with so many other gimmick leagues out there, I think this would be an interesting (AND FUN!) add on.
