Favorite progressive players Topic

Actually, not a lot of these guys are favorites of mine, but I had an idle quarter hour and toted up the players I've either drafted or traded for most often in progressives. The list was compiled from my 10 current progressive leagues and about 130 total seasons.

I haven't drafted any player more than three times. Those I've drafted or traded for 3 times -

Bill Buckner
Billy Southworth
Brady Anderson
Charlie Grimm
Mark McLemore
Mike Fitzgerald
Nelson Santovenia

Andy Benes
Rube Benton

Hall of Famers I've drafted/traded for twice-

Bill Mazeroski
Casey Stengel
George Brett
Sam Crawford
Ted Williams

Clark Griffith
Gaylord Perry
Steve Carlton

Any other progressive owner tracking this kind of stuff? Anyone find themself drafting the same player a number of times?

Al Leiter and Will Clark
Vinny Castilla
Ray Lankford too, though he doesn't justify it most of the time

The Garden State Gaylords are named after Mr. Perry. I like him.

I have become a huge fan of Bobby Thomson because he is a good CF and 3b.

I had Don Kessinger a # of times. Shawon Dunston too. I tend to lock onto shortstops.

Carlton was three championships for me.

Dan Quisenberry has pretty much sucked for me. He refuses to get anyone out.

Owning Keith Moreland has been an adventure in where I could hide him.

I've had Quiz in two different leagues. In a single season progressive he's been above average - in a two-season prog he's been terrible.

In the single season league he was -

54-44, 136 saves, 929 IP, 3.51 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, .252 OAV

In the dual season league he was

41-37, 117 saves, 644 IP, 4.25 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, .302 OAV

The dual season stats are thru 1986, and the other season has been simming thru the 40s and 50s, so the inflation is kind of understandable. Plus, the single season home park was Shea, the dual season's Sportmen's.

I drafted Harry Heilmann in 3 different leagues... and he takes forever to mature. I've also drafted Juan Marichal, Ron Reed, Grant Jackson, Jim Lonborg, Ken Johnson, Troy Percival, Lee May and Ed Brinkman 3 times each...

Never had Cobb, Ruth, T Williams, Musial, Mays, Mantle, Aaron, Bench, Seaver, Carlton, or Ryan on any progressive team.

Best player I've ever drafted... Jimmie Foxx in sheller's SOOP league.

Jimmie 'The Beast' Foxx - frakking incredible career in that league, Al

Speaking of Heilmann... I think delayed growth is the reason I've picked up about half of my 3-fers, guys like Grimm, Brady Anderson, Buckner don't exactly hit the ground running. Done of them are steals of the magnitude of Heilmann, but I was able to get them later than I think I should have been.

I call them 'mortgage picks'. I just, for the first time, drafted Dazzy Vance in a progressive - the Extreme league where we start with everyone and anyone in their 1st season and progress on from there. Vance makes a brief, ineffectual appearance in the db in 1915 and you don't see him again until 1922. Drafting him is taking an 8-year mortgage on the league.

#1...Walter Johnson, of course. I've had him since the beginning of the Big Time progressive and its been amazing. He's up into the 1923 season and isn't dominant now, but still seems to win more than his share of games.

Another player I really like is Dolph Camilli...he has over performed almost every season for me. I've got him in one of sheller's SOOP prog...in his 1936 season currently running he's hitting .356 with 30 HR's and 128 rbi's through 99 games.

Jim Gilliam is another favorite as he seems to over perform almost every season.

My el cheapo favorite is Gary Redus...always over performs. I've had him in 3 progs and draft him every chance I get in the later rounds.

Wally Moses is also a favorite of mine...as is Dave Parker.

I love Redus too. He has been a stud.

The above is Quisenberry...the top season is 1984.....1983 was the only season where he was as good as his RL stats.

This is a single season for me.

Jim Maloney because I won the WS in the 1st season of the Beer League, the 1st draft progressive and Maloney went 5-0 in the playoffs. Never gotten him again though. He is the poor mans Sandy Koufax.

y Grove was amazing for me as well.

Oh and I can't forget OF Roy White. Under rated when he played and under valued in progressives.

Also had Bobby Murcer in 2 different leagues and he plays great for me.

Funny I really hate the yankees yet these are 2 of my favorite OF's in progressives.

Del Ennis and Bobby Bonds as well. Got them both with around the 8-10 pick. Ennis I was not thrilled about and he was a stud.

I've only played in a few progressives as of yet, but the one player I've enjoyed multiple times is Nolan Ryan. I've got him near the end of his career in one league where he's become the ace of a mediocre staff, enabling me to make it to the playoffs 4 years running. In the other league, I drafted him at the inception of the league in 1969, and he's just now entering his prime in 1972 where he's #2 or #3 of a great pitching staff.

Kirby Puckett. In my one progressive playing in Minnesota he is currently the all time hits leader. Started in the 80's. I still have 2 more years of him but eventually I think he will be passed by Wade Boggs.

Don't know how I forgot Dennis Eckersly. Drafted him twice, love him as a starter and if you are not good late in his career he has huge trade value as a closer.
