Alright, I saw what Kermit did with his teams and thought it would be cool to do one of my own...

neabaseball recently started a Progressive that begins in 1885-86... we go through history two years at a time- there are other rules, but in essence, I drafted the ballpark, the Polo Grounds.

I named my team the New York Rebels... and this is going to basically be like Kermit's thread.

Alright, so my first draft, I picked 6th to begin with, in a Modified Serpentine Order: 1-16,16-1,16-1,1-16, repeat, so I got some great players from WAY back when...

My first draft pick: 1B Roger Connor

3rd Round: P John Healy

4th Round: 2B Yank Robinson

5th Round: P Nat Hudson

6th Round: OF Abner Dalrymple

7th Round: C Chris Fulmer

8th Round: 3B Hick Carpenter

9th Round: OF Jim Manning

10th Round: OF Chief Roseman

11th Round: P Al Atkinson

12th Round: Polo Grounds in New York, New York

13th Round: P Bill Mountjoy

14th Round: OF Hugh Nicol

15th Round: C Bob Clark

16th Round: P Buck Becannon

17th Round: 3B Jack Gleason

17th Round (2): 2B Sam Crane

That's my starters...

Manager Jim Murtrie: "We think we're going to win with our Offense... [we will] score runs, and most teams focused on Pitching... we drafted Roger and Jack so we could win 10-9 games."

1B Roger Connor: "I honestly do not know what it's like to be on a winning team, but guys like Abner and Chris do, and that is going to help us win this year."

Preview of 1885-86 Season:

Opposing Pitching Coach: "[1B Roger] Connor will make or break their season. He's so fluid at the plate- always knows what he is doing, which is huge. I absolutely love OF Chief Roseman- not sure why, but he is just fantastic in my opinion. [I] love his hustle."

Opposing Manager: "[New York] has a risky strategy going for them- I do not think they will win the Title this year, but in a couple years, they're going to be scary. They're young. Robinson and Glasscock in the middle is incredible. Anyone who knows anything would kill for that."

C Chris Fulmer: "We are young. Our lineup is going to score- I think we have one of the best in the league in that respect. The pitching is a cut below most of the other teams in the league, but we are going to outscore people this year, and I like that."

NYR Newsletter: "The Rebels are looking at a mediocre first couple years, in all probabilities. But the future is bright, and this great city could have a title in a few years. Roger is the best 1B in the league. Robinson and Glasscock are fantastic, and Carpenter is solid. We have the best Infield, we think. The Outfield has issues but it's still pretty good- considering we got Abner, one of the more underrated OFs in the entire league. Chief and Jim are serviceable. John Healy is not the ideal ace, but 15-20 wins (comfortably) is expected. Hudson we really like here at the Newsletter- he is the sleeper of the team- him and Dalrymple. Atkinson is a good third, and Mountjoy in relief, but he is at the end of his career, so a replacement is needed. Chris is a grizzled veteran who is really going to help the team wade through losing stretches this season. Manning is near the end of his career as well, so another Outfielder would be greatly appreciated by us here at the New York Rebels Newsletter."

The Rebels faced the New York Amateur All-Stars in an Exhibition Game at the Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon. The Rebels defeated the Stars by a score of 8-2. John Healy pitched 7 innings of 2-run baseball, giving up three hits including a home run to Jerry Sanders, a young man from Long Island. Chris Fulmer doubled home Hick Carpenter in the second to begin the scoring, and Roger Connor blasted a shot off the wall in the fifth to bring home three, and the Rebels cruised. Bill Mountjoy pitched the final two innings of the game. Jack Glasscock went 3-for-4 with a Stolen Base, Walk, and RBI.

I'll bet Glasscock is the butt of alot of locker room jokes.

indeed... im trying to make this as "real" as possible, with the quotes and the language of the time, not to mention the real Giants used to play Amateur All-Star teams all the time way back when

The Rebels were victorious over the Columbia Lions College Team yesterday afternoon, 5-0. Nat Hudson pitched a complete game 2-hitter. Jim Manning and Yank Robinson had 2-RBI doubles in the sixth, and Jack Glasscock singled Hudson home in the eighth.
