New Progressive league ideas? Topic

I'm going to cut back on the number of theme leagues I commish and play in so I can concentrate more on progressives. I want to start a new progressive, and I'd like to hear what interests owners, as well as what they don't like in progressive leagues.

In my King's Royal progressive we started by each owner submitting a list of players consisting of 2 catchers, 2 1B, 2 2B, 2 3B, 2 SS, 4 OF and 10 pitchers. They offered players to the mix that could be at the beginning, in their prime or at the end of their careers. I added in a handful of players at each position to complete the player pool. From the list I randomly assigned owners with a roster of players to start with(No draft that first year. It was quick, and off you go...). They were allowed to twist a few that first season. In subsequent seasons players age each season, and we have a committee of 5 owners that provide us a list of players that make up our free agent pool. Owners are required to trim rosters prior to the draft. You are allowed to protect up to 20 players max, players on IR not counting against that number. We hold a one round Rule V draft, you can pick any unprotected from the list. We have a reclaiming afterwards, then move onto the free agent draft.

I'm not a big fan of anti-tanking rules, but we do use a wins floor minimum. We require a minimum # of wins by game #120, otherwise you're penalized in the upcoming draft by getting docked so many spots in the draft order. I don't feel there should be an IP minimum. If guys are sincere about being competitive, they'll draft enough innings.

Trading should definitely be allowed and encouraged. For me a big part of a progressive league is being an active owner, always trying to improve my team. In my own league, I have to set an example, so I am very much active and encourage others to get out there and trade...

I like the random start to a league, and I'm not a big fan of single season progressives. Using all seasons randomly keeps it fresh, as well as challenging...

Trading draft picks - we do, but limit it to where you can't trade picks more than 2 years into the future..

We enforce a trade veto, we veto a trade if 8 or more owners oppose the trade.

Owners that run 2 teams in a league is something I try to avoid. The trade rules between those teams must be legitimate, and not lopsided...

DH - This is a good debate. I'm not a DH fan, but I like it in progressives. It gives you a chance to use your bench, there's usually enough talent to go around, so why not use them?

AAA- use them, or not?

Divisional alignment - I like rivalries, so once you're in a division, you stay there...Random the first season, then keep 'em the same..

Thoughts?

I've been in your King's Royal league for a few seasons and I like that players progress through their careers in different years.

AAA-lose them

I'm not a DH fan, your bench can be involved as pinch hitters

Division rivaries are a must

Trading should be a big part of any progressive

I would use AAA in single season Progressive's only and then make them the worst level that is offered.

To me, the random start holds no interest. I need to feel connected to my team, and getting a random list of guys just doesn't do that for me.

I am looking for an opening in a 2 season progressive. Sitemail me if anyone has a team open

I too am looking for a new 2 season progressive, been away from the site for well over a year.

I put one in the forums, but not having much luck, so would be willing to drop mine and join yours if you get one going.

Im with biglenr on random starts, I wanna have some sort of interest in my players or my interest in the team just wont be there.

As for ideas, how bout this??

Start with a 2 round draft. You can draft any sub .500 team each round. (Say from 1960-Present?) Everyone would end up with 2 teams full of players to get there talent base from, then would have to cut down to 25, all players would start from the season they were chosen in and progress from that year. Put a $100 Mil cap on it so maybe some tough choices have to be made?

Or something along those lines maybe, its different anyway, lol

I'm in CLWECW's Triple Era Progressive. I like the format of 3 seasons, and they hold 3 separate drafts at once. Unfortunately they don't allow trading of picks across eras. If I'm trading, I'd like to be able to cross over and draft out of the other eras as well as my own.

One thing I'm not a fan of: Having to sift through the draft center to find all the available players for a given season. Using a pre determined list of players for free agency is easier, and you can better gauge the quality of those free agents. My 2 cents...

Love progressives and would be interested in joining another one.

One idea that I thought worked really well in a recent single seasoon progressive startup was rather than a full player by player draft was to draft an entire teams pitchers or hitters for that year. Serpentine draft, two rounds. Ends up with relatively balanced teams and a quick draft that doesn't have to worry about collapsing from a few people giving up in round 10 or whatever as so many tend to have happen.

It is time consuming checking for new available players, especially in a 2 season progressive.

You could also use a pre determined draft list for the initial draft.

I could probably make something like this work. You'd have the chance to draft the '92 Braves pitchers, or the '43 Cardinals outfield, or a mix of pitchers/players from a given franchise.... Offer a bunch of goodie bags to pick from. You could also include a stadium in the batch...Something like that...Perhaps batches of players to draft, rather than picking them individually. After selecting the majority of your players this way, we'd have a list of players to draft that would fill your roster...Kind of a mix might work...I could assemble the batches of players by league too, some would be AL-only or NL-only players, or from the same time period..

I could leave it up to the owners to create the player list too...

This is a totally halfbaked idea, but what about an alphabet progressive? To wit: we open up the initial draft with the letter A, then each season role out a new group of players alphabetically a certain number at a time, so for example, the first year's draft can be Ba-Be, the next one can be Bf-Bu.

I'll leave it to you guys to hammer out the details, but at least I'm thinking creatively.
