Just got thru with a Champs League season in which four different seasons of Tim Raines effectively overperformed.

Any ideas why, besides raw Log5 yada?

i would think its because he was in the astrodome and comerica in those instances. they don't really minimize base hits, however they minimize home runs. i'm not sure what the hits formula is, but raines, and mcgee types always do well in non hr parks like that

That doesn't make them overperform consistently though, considering he doesn't hit much homeruns anyway. There are a bunch of hitters who don't hit many homeruns, and they aren't overperforming.

I personally use raines alot bc of his better normalization, speed, and low strikeouts.

There's something else in common with guys who overperform alot. 93 Phillips, Mcgee, Dilone and Raines all have 1 very important thing in common...

They're switch hitters. Speedy (80+ speed) switch hitters overperform more than any other type of hitter in the sim.

yep. It's all how the engine is set up when they face the opposite armed pitcher. If they only slightly over compensate it would make switch hitters MUCH better. I've had several weak to fair switchies excel. Ever notice how many good righty hitters suffer in good pitching leagues with many of the same top right handed starters?

sounds like a good theme league....
choose 9 switch hitters and the rest 200k guys that dont get to play.
the pitching staffs would have to be min 2 starters righty and 2 y with 220.ip/162 and no rules for the bullpen.
maybe a few AAA position players - but only those that switch hit would be allowed( i guess a choose your own)

I think speed and contact rate are huge factors. Putting balls in play vs not great range infielders, while your guy has blazing speed, gives a great chance for infield hit.

Yes, that plays a role as well tianyi, I agree.

I was just looking at his stats and noticed that in 1985 and 1986 he had 70 SB and 9 CS. I wonder if anyone in the history of baseball with a significant number of stolen base attempts had identical stats in back to back seasons.

It's still difficult for me to understand why Raines isn't in the Hall of Fame and a player like Andre Dawson is.....

Had a long career with good numbers, but just not enough awards. Never won MVP and only had 1 batting title. 20+ seasons but not in the 3000 hit club. He also didn't get the gold gloves or silver slugger awards that players like Tony Gwynn got. On top of that, he didn't have the outstanding power numbers that alot of the hofers have. I like raines but I think his chances into the Hof is not good.

He will make it... eventually. It is just that it often takes a while to appreciate a guys skills when he isn't "inner circle." Also keep in mind, most of Raines career was with the Expos. Montreal is not a politicaly strong city when is comes to baseball.

As much as I like Lou Brock...I feel Raines equally deserves a HOF spot. His OBP is much higher...plus his success rate is much better also. (not to mention his defense)

Please don't think I am knocking Brock...he along with Wills were pioneers of the stolen base as a weapon in the 60's and 70's.

Two things elevated Brock into the Hall of Fame: Eclipsing Wills' SB record by being the first to top 100 and his stardom in three World Series. He was not nearly the equal of Raines or Henderson or Coleman as a base stealer in any season except '74.

Raines just wasn't lucky enough to play on the best team or to score his best moments in the "fame" spotlight. (Although he is famous for supposedly carrying some dope in his uniform pocket.)

It is the Hall of FAME, and some occurrences elevate players above their statistical performance record alone.

I agree on most counts dt...Brock was in the spotlight more by being in the World Series several times.

I met Raines outside of Busch Stadium prior to a game in the early 80's...he was nice enough. His "attire" was pimp-like to say the least.
