Which Outfielder Should I Put at 1B? Topic

I rolled the dice and took these four outfielders and tanked a first baseman. None of these guys have a 1B fielding rating for the season I have them. Ebbets field will be their home ballpark. The pitchers are all modern day guys. Here's the players and their OF rating:

'08 Beltran A/A+
'79 Lynn B+/A-
'78 Rice B+/C
'67 Yaz C+/B-

So, who would you play at 1B? Thanks for your help!

Yaz. Your welcome!

I'd go

RF-Yastrzemski

CF-Beltran

LF-Lynn

1B-Rice

I'm with arvidjosef and thats_nice... play Rice at 1B. Range doesn't matter that much but Yaz might make a few too many errors.

Rice @ 1st

Yep, Rice at First and the other guys as indicated above.

Definately Rice or Yaz, but I'll go with Boog on this one.

Why is Lynn in LF rather than RF? Is it because more balls are hit to LF (more RH hitters)?

More balls are hit to right field because of right handed pitchers throwing to switch hitters, so you always put your best corner fielder in right, but don't tell anybody else.

That's why I would have Lynn in RF!

Also, errors and - plays in right tend to be more costly (and + plays worth more) than field since runners can more easily adavnce or score on balls hit to RF.

I can see being easier to advance from 2nd to 3rd, but how it is easier to score if a ball is hit to RF instead of LF?

Yes. I always used 2nd best in RF. Was assured by some who look closer at the numbers than myself that LF was the way to go. Looking at my own stats on various teams..I mean...I really cannot say one way or the other..still...after like 4+ years...

I guess it depends on the park, but I'd say it's easier because a runner can watch the plan unfold in right as he rounds third and heads for home...it's easier then for him to go or put on the brakes. In LF, the play is behind the runner as he heads for home so you have to make up your mind sooner.

As for the initial question:

Lynn RF
Beltran CF
Rice LF
Yaz 1B

An error at first will lead to a "single" to right, most often. An error in RF will usually end up with the runner on second or third. Plus Beltran's range may help him get some balls Rice can't.
