Range or Fielding? Topic

I've had moderate success playing in SIM, but I am looking to learn more about the game. One of the great unkowns is the importance of range relative to fielding. Is one more important then the other; does it depend on position?

both are imprtant, it does depend on position, and the answer keeps changing every time they make an adjustment. fielding is more important at SS and 3B because they can make a ton of errors, tho range is as important here as anywhere else.

Is it fair to say that fielding is more important at 3B, and range is more important at 2b (for double plays)?

I did some analysis on this some months back and I saw range is only slightly more important for double plays at 2B than at SS. The update may have increased the difference, but I doubt

Overall fielding seems to matter as one would expect except for 1B and C which make far fewer errors than one might expect based on fielding percentage. I think the jury is still out on range. Still, I would think carefully about taking a below average-range middle infielder; I'd take at least a B in CF and I'd stay away from D- range everywhere.

ask yourself this question

Do I want my players to get to more balls and maybe make a few more errors, or let a decent amount of hits get through but only flub a few that they do get to?

Do you want Inge or Zimmerman over there? (444 total chances - 20 Es and 459 tc - 17 Es respectively)

Or do you want Kouzmanoff? (Only 311 total chances, but just 3 Es)

Neither - I want '54 Danny O'Connel - he has NEVER made an error EVER at 3rd base and I use him all the time.

I think the obvious answer is Inge or Zimmerman

Wish there was a chart where you can measure different grades in both area to see what is equivalent to what

You would DEFINITELY prefer Kouz in your example, at least as far as defense is concerned. Kouzmanoff is A+/D, and an excellent A+. He shouldn't make more than 5 errors in the season. He likely makes about 2+ plays and 11 or 12 - plays. Inge and Zimmerman each probably make 20 errors, 8 or 9 + plays, and 1 or 2 -. Not a big enough difference in the +/- plays even after the update to make up for how good of a fielder Kouz is.

OK - I've got one...who to put in center?: C+/A+ or A/C-

Dahs,

I guess I am unclear why Kouz would be better; your missing out on 120 outs a season.

Definitely C+/A+. Range is much more important in centerfield imo
