Up to 1963 obviously USA but since overall I have to go with the brits. The original big 4 then Pink Floyd and zeppelin to the new wave which was much more British then American. Since the mid 90s it is pretty even.
usa of course has Dylan and Bruce and Petty and patty and Ramones and Eagles and Nirvana and X but then the brits have the prog rockers and the best post new wave.

I give the brits the slight edge only because of the Big Bang of the big 4 and the new wave movement.

And is Jimi Hendrix Experience an American band ?
I say English just like the Pretenders.

Big 4? Beatles, Rolling Stones...

I was including U2 with the UK although not technically part of it. You could include the Cranberries and ABBA too!

Jimmy was born in Seattle, WA, but died in London. His grave is on Capitol Hill!

Depends on your criteria definition of "Best" and "Rock". The Beatles weren't any more 'rock' than The Beach Boys or Simon and Garfunkel. And as notable as The Invasion was in a short period, America still had CCR, The Byrd's, Sly Stone, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, Buffalo Springfield, Santana, Allman Brothers, all from that same early era.

Respectfully I would say that the Beatles and stones by themselves easilyequa and surpass l those American groups combined and then add The Who and the kinks. Pink Floyd zeppelin Bowie and Elton John and Hendrix because he was a British act.

Everybody has their opinion and all opinions are opinions. I assert my opinions but by no means marginalize a dissenting opinion.
and everyone should support their point of view and unless gets persuaded stick to their guns - at all times.

"BEST" for that time is fine and I won't disagree. I've already listed Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who as all-time faves. It's not as if the Brits invented rock n roll and gifted America with it; they were already well represented. This could segway endless directions and overlap genres; you say Oasis, I say Nirvana. Kinda like a no wrong answer Musial/Teddy Ballgame affair !

""My List of Notable Albums of 2020
3. Mamalarky - Mamalarky""

Soothing backing sound, like a river running outside my bedroom window. Give it a go while chillaxin in the hot tub. Not a fan musically of the sleepy spoken word concept. If I wanted a poetry reading, I'd go to a poetry reading. Sing. Too Fiona Apple-ish and way below even Tori Amos who I barely find tolerable. I might keep it around at 25% volume while cleaning around the garage or working on a fantasy spreadsheet, but to each their own.

I am assuming that you did nit like it.
I would not compare it to tori Amos or Fiona Apple.
it is more of a jangly indie sound.
it really is a genre sound. I find that I only like a handful of “indie” albums each year. To me this one is inventive and the songs are sufficiently different to keep it interesting.

music is like food - for the soul.
people’s taste buds will differ.

Don't forget the Smiths in that New Wave sound!

Morrisey and the smiths are great.
morrisey solo has a song called - last of the gang to die that really gets me.

When talking about "big" rock acts from that early era............how come so many of us forget Ten Years After or the blues band Fleetwood Mac.
Both were as "big" (or bigger) than the Stones or the Who at that time.

They are certainly not forgotten. As you know I count ten years after as a favorite band. And early fleetwood I agree was stupendous.

Talking about popularity in England during the new wave explosion The Jam were even more popular then the Police but were unknown to the American public...they never broke through here and got very little airplay.
