I would think John Lofton would be a lock from the guys that still have chances left.

Ok, so, I WAS thinking that some of these guys are actually not eligible for the HOF (Giles, in particular) and that proved correct when the voting noms came out tonight. Some are on here - Shipley, Harvey, but others are not. (Giles!)

These numbers are great to have, though! They do bring an interesting element; I am still of the opinion that Harvey, elite as he was in small doses, remains something of a strange HOF case because he never played a single full season, only eclipsing 400 AB's twice, and usually ending up in the 300 range. There are zero historical comps for a HOF player of that type, regardless of WAR by whatever formula we calculate it.

I'm all for Shipley as a HOF'er though, really think he was a complete player. Ditto Lofton, who I think deserves our highest level of support. Elite bat with good enough defense in LF (and superlative defensively at 1b when played there, though obviously that's not hard to do). I remain a fan of CARL Harvey, and would definitely vote for Roosevelt Curtis, who had a strong career with a couple busted seasons that seem to be due mostly to absentee ownership.

Lofton for sure. Other bat that was a stud that should go in was Fauntino Saenz. Not sure on the arms.

OK, so from the comments above I'm gathering that John Lofton (and maybe Shipley) be recommend as locks regardless of WAR numbers and I should run the numbers on the following players: Carl Harvey, Roosevelt Curtis, Fautino Saenz (at least to start) and then I'll start going through the nomination page.

Edit: Here are the numbers for the guys listed above...
  • John Lofton- 67 WAR, Worthy of Strong Consideration
  • Carl Harvey-57 WAR, Worthy of Strong Consideration
  • Roosevelt Curtis- 35 WAR, Probably Not A HOF'er
  • Fautino Saenz- 86 WAR, Definitely HOF'er

Shane Giles - P probably SHOULD have been voted in. https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=3357946

Bruinsfan, out of curiosity, what would these two fellas' WAR estimates be?:
  1. John Servais - 2B https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=7529484
  2. Gabriel McKain - LF https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=73515

  3. Willis Tanner - P https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=7352330

As of this moment, my votes, in order, are looking like this:

  1. Fautino Saenz - C (86 estimated WAR)
  2. John Lofton - LF (67 estimated WAR, but with great Extras and a .959 lifetime OPS)
  3. Darren Harvey - C (71 estimated WAR)
  4. Carl Harvey - P (57 estimated WAR)
  5. Tied between: Marcus Shipley (68 estimated WAR), John Servais, Gabriel McKain (I know, everyone hates him), Willis Tanner, and Roosevelt Curtis (35 estimated WAR) ... with my gut saying it should probably be Shipley as the fifth pick.
Now, since we are to only come up with 2 or 3 locks and merely list our alternates, I'd say we are in a bit of a pickle. I'd hate to list three position players as "locks" and leave out Carl Harvey. We probably OUGHT to include a pitcher as a "lock" nearly every season that has this many contenders.

Thoughts?

What’s wrong with giving 4 locks this year? If it’s a hall of fame worthy player or pitcher let’s recommend them for lock status.

I kind of agree with xmasjjm here. However, we'd, as a group, previously agreed to stick to no more that three "locks". Perhaps we can word it this way to the owners:

Absolute LOCKS:
  1. Fautino Saenz - C (86 estimated WAR)
  2. John Lofton - 1B/LF (67 estimated WAR, but with great Extras and a .959 lifetime OPS)
  3. Carl Harvey - SP (57 estimated WAR)

Alternate Number ONE, strongly suggested:
  1. Darren Harvey - C/DH (71 estimated WAR)
Remaining Alternates:
  • Marcus Shipley - COF/2B (68 estimated WAR)
  • Roosevelt Curtis - SP (35 estimated WAR)
  • and maybe whichever of the remaining guys listed above ends up with the highest WAR?
^^^ Does this sound reasonable to the group?

Sounds good to me.

This also sounds good to me, I'll crunch the numbers on those guys this afternoon
