State Farm Squads: How Can I Assist? Topic

1)  Yes.  Very significant.

2)  No.  I hypothesize that there are breakpoints yet I have not nor do I intend to do the testing to confirm said hypothesis.

3)  Yes.  Always.  The only reason to run less than up-tempo is if you are certain your opponent has a stronger team than you.  Statistically you are only hurting yourself by slowing the tempo down when you have everything covered.

appreciate the input, ash.

anyone else? do you think the increase to efg% that you receive from a high cumulative assist% (once you reach about 120+), is linearly related or there are breakpoints (ie - like the usage tiers)?
2/13/2014 10:15 PM
As much as tang apparently likes to argue the point, ash is the foremost expert on the workings of the sim right now. Unless you can get significant data proving otherwise, what ash says goes.

hboms, the conclusion I reached (and the major reason why I quit testing it) is that you do get major boosts... the sky seems to be the limit.  However, you still need to think about more than just shooting ridiculously good to be a consistent champion.  I've won far more titles upping my defense, rebounds & lowering turnovers than getting those sick fg% numbers and haven't seen many people be able to do it.  It's a gimmick - a gimmick that works pretty well - but it's not so overpowering that well balanced teams can't win.  Benhoidal has probably had the most success with the strategy that I've seen, though he wasn't cranking out jlg's insane 150% bonuses and went the more balanced path.

It sure is a lot of fun to see those ridiculous fg% numbers, though.  I highly recommend giving it a go just for the fun factor.

So back in my younger days, when I tried 120% you better make sure your team is balanced and have checked off the things mentioned by Mr Ash. I won my championships with 150% and when it's that high it didn't really matter my DEF/REB cause your shooting 60%. like wise do you really need to worry about OReb when your shooting 67% 2pt.  it's not crazy talk to but Lebron at the 5 if you get your name on the Wis Front page 6 weeks later. good luck Hbhorns. if you would like feel free to make a do an exbihition sim game and search for user/my name/ my sim teams. a couple of those are my championship teams to give you an idea of how i ran mine
2/14/2014 6:07 PM
smackdown is running an absolutely off the charts ast% team (currently in top 25). We're talking like 175%.
I am running an "on the charts"--but very high on the charts, like 115%-- team in the same league. Also in top 25.

Very excited to see if we face off in playoffs, almost inevitably we will in Conf Finals. I should win but am honestly debating half court. It's weird because I agree with Ash. But he is going to outshoot me...does the possession control put me over the top?
2/14/2014 7:40 PM
This team just won a ring... 111% cumulative ast% in the SL (drops a bit when bench comes in).  The idea was to try and get a nice bump from high ast% while using guys that had (relatively) low tov%.  James, Billups & CP3 are among the best when it comes to having high ast%, low%.

Here's the spreadsheet:  Lebron had a marginal bump up to 62.8% efg%; cp3 also only had a small bump up to 53.1%.  Mr. Big Shot, however, had a nice bump up to 55.2%.  Team had a tov% of only 17.1%, which is amazing for a team with 77.9% ast% (actual result, not cumulative RL stats).

How did you find the ast% for your team as it performed in the sim?
2/22/2014 8:38 PM
I have a spreadsheet template I made in google docs... I put data in for every team to get my advanced results.

this thread hasnt been updated in a while. several teams have been mentioned when they were created but results for those teams havent been updated.

1) for a team with assist% totallying 130-140% at all times, should I expect significant increase in fg%?

2) do you think from about 120% assist%, all the way to the max, the increase in fg% related to total assist% is linear?

3) and lastly, do you think running up-tempo to max out fg% bump is good idea? or run half-court to limit TOs while getting assist% bump?

appreciate your inputs. thanks

My observations are as follows:

1)      In an open league it is highly likely to get a significant bump in shooting percentages with 130-140% assists, however don’t bank on it in an elite theme league where defense is likely to be very high (70D+ average with ½ the teams approaching an average D of 80).

2)      The D you face is a critical factor in the equation, logain had the best result I’ve ever seen, in the DH$52 he had something around 150% assists and picked up close to a 5% bump. I have not observed the bump as linear since the D you face is a variable you have no control over. IMO the bump is always relative to the opponents D.

3)      Depends on how much usage you draft. IMO if you draft something around 125 RL possessions per 48 minutes then you reduce the odds of your players hitting the individual penalty and the tov% bump by running Up Tempo will be minimized, but if you are sub-115 or so your turnovers will be a significant bump.

thanks for the input. I posed these questions because, in the past I read the high ast% teams won alot of regular season games, but lost deep in the playoffs when they were up against strong defensive teams. this must have been because strong def teams neutralize the assist bump, and that exposes their weak rebounding and TOs.

I joined a no-defense theme league (all players under 50 def), figuring that no team would be able to neutralize my teams fg% bump.

I've set my lineups depths to have pretty much 145-155 assist% at any given moment. my players are shooting lights out. however, my guys are not doing a good job of stopping anyone, and i'm sitting at around .500 after 20 games.

I think in a no-defense league, it would have been a better strategy to focus on minimizing TO's when I drafted my team. oh well

Could have pumped out some higher ast%, but I feel like the Camby Combination kept us in the game on the boards.

btw, the rookie, Jeff Rhodes, that shelled out the nice 62.4% efg is Brad Lohaus:

I remember reading how in a post a few months ago, but can you remind me (and the sim population at large) how to find the RL equivalent of rookies?

do a search based on position effectiveness, per/mid/pnt percentages, etc
5/8/2014 7:48 PM
in the simleague search, search for a player with the same perimter/midrange/post percentages, and you can narrow it down further by searching for certain positional efficiencies.

for example, if a player has 99% at point guard, 100% at SG, 99% at SF, 94% at PF, and 80% at C, then put each of those numbers in a range in the advanced sim search. it should narrow it down significantly when done in conjuction with the percentages for perimter/midrange/post
