ill check them out.
the shooter was not a criminal until he became one...im concerned that we are now meeting the intersection of available guns and available nuts.
I can go into Home Depot, buy a portable Paslode nail gun, walk into a mall and fire off hundreds of 3 inch nails into a crowd. It ain't the guns, it's the nuts.

The sad reality is if someone is hell bent on committing a heinous crime, especially if acting alone, it is darned difficult to prevent.
this is true. Its not gun control we need so much as we need to be more supportive of our mentally ill.
As far as the shooter not being a criminal until he did the shooting...I don't know. I've tried to avoid reading too much about him. I know he had a lot of weapons in the room with him? Did he come by all of them legally? If not, he was a criminal before he started shooting. If so, what logical reason could anyone give for needing to have that many guns? You want guns for self-protection? Fine. I'm not sure how effective that is, but do you really need dozens of guns for self-protection?
We don't need ANY guns for self-protection.

Once someone becomes a criminal, they should get NO guns. That's what police are for.

We should restrict the amount of guns distributed and have extreme procedures if you want to get one.
Felons can't purchase weapons legally.

You don't believe in deterrence? If I think you may own a gun, I am less likely to invade your home. But you keep thinking they aren't necessary...

The government isn't going to confiscate 300 million firearms. They would need to order a lot of body bags. Those folks clinging to their guns won't give them up, not peacefully. ..
No, I don't. I would not know that you had a gun in your home anyway. The government would not confiscate firearms. They would implement a plan now, so the effects take place over time. (So no one would lose guns)
Unfortunately this is the real world. Criminals will not stop committing crimes, and people will want to continue to defend themselves. I am no more of a threat to the population if I own 10 guns, instead of 1 or 2. The nutjob pulling the trigger is the threat, not the guns. If he can't acquire a gun, he will find other means. We can do away with the gadgets to make weapons fire automatically. That is progress. What you are calling for isn't realistic.
Again, this is like saying, "Murder will happen anyway, so let's have the Purge!" Also, you basically just used inherency against me, which is a no-no in debate. Again, 'defending yourself' is not something that statistically happens and you have provided no evidence to back your claims up... I am not saying to take away all guns, just only give them to proven people and to not show them in public. Is that too much to ask?

If a criminal KNOWS a homeowner does not possess a weapon, I guarantee they are more likely to enter your home. The possibility that a gun awaits them? That is deterrence. You take that away, you have anarchy.

I feel your pain. I wish people, especially those that cannot physically defend themselves, didn't live in fear. But they do. That sidearm next to their bed is their security. People that hunt, collect weapons like those that collect stamps, are not a threat to the general public. The odd case of someone going out and shooting people is not common, thank God. Perhaps our government can improve on making gun purchases safer, keeping them out of the hands of those not capable of owning them safely. Do a better job of teaching gun safety. That would help. But it is not a perfect world...

I agree with your last 4 sentences. And I agree that you cannot 'solve' gun violence, just like you can't 'solve' smoking. However, we can make a difference. With the criminal example, they probably would not know that the homeowner possesses a weapon.

Kill 'em with kindness.

the technology of todays weapons is too powerful for so many people who are actually not adjudicated as mentally ill nor do they have a criminal record...the necessary responsibility for so many weapons is beyond the maturity or ability or psyche for many people who have impulses they dont acknowledge or sometimes do not even know that they have............its a mad, mad, mad, mad world..........we cant stop some people who have no business from owning guns from getting them legally........the slippery slope has morphed us into a bunch of penguins on the edge of the cliff........bon voyage.

if trump tries to undo the iran deal i think there will be a serious push for the 25th amendment coming from the generals.......that would be very dangerous....this is serious stuff.

the guns in chicago come from neighboring states........if the neighboring states had bans then there would be a lot less guns in chicago.

How would a criminal KNOW whether a homeowner has a gun or not? Ask? I, for one, am not saying take away everyone's gun. Having a gun and a rifle for protection and/or hunting is okay. Why would anyone need 10 guns? Or 37? Say, you are not home when a robber breaks into your house. He steals you 10 guns and now a criminal has those 10 guns instead of you. How do you stop that? Never leave the hose?

How to get a gun in Japan:
To get a gun in Japan, first, you have to attend an all-day class and pass a written test, which are held only once per month. You also must take and pass a shooting range class. Then, head over to a hospital for a mental test and drug test (Japan is unusual in that potential gun owners must affirmatively prove their mental fitness), which you’ll file with the police. Finally, pass a rigorous background check for any criminal record or association ...with criminal or extremist groups, and you will be the proud new owner of your shotgun or air rifle. Just don’t forget to provide police with documentation on the specific location of the gun in your home, as well as the ammo, both of which must be locked and stored separately. And remember to have the police inspect the gun once per year and to re-take the class and exam every three years.
Japan had 11 gun deaths in 2008.
