Is Lebron's Eff really worth it? Topic

Does anyone know exactly what the individual defensive ratings do? I mean specifically, like does each point of defense shave 0.1% off of the opponent's shooting percentage?

This question^ I also want to know

Yeah, that is another good question I've kinda wondered.

It's neither that clear cut nor ever been revealed.  All I can really say is that given enough sample size, you shoot better against a team of 50 defenders than you do 60 defenders, and again 70 defenders, etc,  but you probably already knew that.

In a recent 40 D and under league, my entire team had an efg of 66.7% for the season.  True% of 69.3%.  Averaged 151 points a game.  I've never had a team perform remotely close to that.  Even the worst teams shot in the high 50's, low 60's.  So yes ... Defense makes a difference, even if no one knows the specifics.

Ok, but what about individually? If most of your guys are, say 80 or 90 D, how bad does it hurt you if one guy is just 60? I've noticed it does. And does it matter based on position?

    • A shot has been attempted. Whether this is a three-point attempt is strictly based on the shooters ratio of three-point attempts to non-three-point field goal attempts. The chance that a player has of making the shot is based on his shooting percentage, the assist rates of his teammates, his defender’s stop percentage (captured by defensive rating) and to a lesser extent the other four player’s stop percentages and the block rates of all five defensive players. If the shot is made, we determine if there was an assist.

Ok. Hmmmm. Well, what position on average do you guys think you can get away with a lesser defensive player? I know it's mostly about matchups, but if you had a team of all 90 plus defensive players & one that was only about 60, which would you feel most comfortable with that low a rating?

I can't & won't answer that question.  It depends on far too many variables.  Experiment for yourself.

off the top of my head, SF

Yeah, I was kinda leaning that way with my guess. My 2nd guess would've been SG, with how many times guys have used guys like Steve Nash in that spot.

so if you have one good defender at guard and one poor one maybe you can get away with it - same with bigs - as long as both can play either so that simmy puts your best on his best (which is what is supposed to happen)

So both can play "either" what?

On the topic of Wilt...I've been more than pleased with my latest 67-68 experiment.
