20 GAME UPDATE: 9-11
Les Nessman reporting:
To say things have gone poorly for the Flytraps so far this season would be completely accurate. This team, expected to contend for the division title, is instead 2 games under .500 and 5.5 games behind a Columbus team that is currently on a 10 game winning streak.
The problems have been on both sides. Offensively, Marshall Ferrell and Parker Bennett are significantly underperforming, with Ferrell batting .205 and Bennett at .223. First base has also been a problem, with Denny Brown, John Nakamura and Rabbit Hudson all having gotten shots, and none of the three batting over .215. The bright spots have been late signee Victor Gonzalez, hitting .333 and rookie Eric Murphy who has 8 HR already.
The starting pitching has been very solid, with Fuentes, Price and Thornton all having ERA's under 4.00, but the bullpen, the key focus for the team in the offseason, has been bad. And the bad part of it - free agent closer Fernando Pena. Pena has picked up 5 saves in 9 appearances, which is good, but it is the other 4 appearances that hurt. He is 0-4 in them. Worse, his ERA is now over 10 after giving up the winning hit in the bottom of the 9th the last 2 games. As a result, management announced today that last year's closer, Fernando Navarro, will be returning to that role and Pena will be pitching in a Setup role until he gets himself straightened out. Navarro, while young, does have experience as a closer from last season, and the team hopes that he can use this temporary job as the closer to actually win the position permanently.
When asked if the team would consider any trades to try to jumpstart the offense, GM csherwood was noncomittal in his response. However, he did state that if the bats dont start producing soon, something will have to be done.
Next update after 40 games....
