Those in their final year (as far as I can tell):
Aroldis Torres
Marcus Shipley
Mark Moore
Ivan Franco
Darren Harvey

This is just me guessing, but here goes my first hunch at the order of importance:
  1. Jeimer Ortega, LF: (9 time All Star, 6 time MVP, 652 career HRs)
  2. Clarence Paul, P (277 wins, career ERA of 2.72 with a 1.11 WHIP; 3,541 career SOs!, 9 AS appearances)
  3. Darren Harvey, C/DH: (.943 career OPS, always on-base, played a decent Catcher)
  4. John Servais, 2B: (.300 career AVE, very good 2B)
  5. Kris Watanabe, SS/2B: (2,766 career hits; 7 AS appearances; 4 time Silver Slugger at SS, 1 time at 2B)
  6. Aroldis Torres, 1B (2,771 career hits; .309 career AVE; had 5 seasons with above .333 AVE!, six if you count his short Rookie Year)
  7. Robert Jacome, P: (career winning % of 63 and WHIP of 1.17)
  8. Roosevelt Curtis, P (career winning % of 61 and WHIP of 1.18)

To borrow a phrase from mr_stickball, here are the candidates I've evaluated using "Importance Score" which is calculated as WAR/year and then awarded bonus points Rings, Pennants, Cy Youngs, MVPs and years with 4+ WAR:

1) Jeimer Ortega: 19.5 Importance Score
2) Clarence Paul: 15.8 Importance Score
3) John Servais: 14.4 Importance Score
4) Marcus Shipley: 8.0 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
5) Robert Jacome: 7.9 Importance Score
6) Darren Harvey: 6.7 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
7) Ivan Franco: 5.5 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
8) Kris Wanatabe: 5.1 Importance Score
9) Aroldis Torres: 4.7 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
10) Mark Moore: 4.0 Importance Score
11) Roosevelt Curtis: 3.9 Importance Score
12) Willis Tanner: 1.8 Importance Score

I actually really like Bruinsfan's updated top 5 there; whatever the science is that made it that way, I generally agree with it. Ortega and Paul are obvious top-end HOF candidates and I assume we don't need any real debate on them. I stumped for Servais last year and supported shipley and would happily do so again. I think Jacome is a clear HOF'er as well.

Of the remainder, Wanatabe is the most interesting case to me, because yes he's a bad-D SS but he was also a good D 2b and he did a lot of good over a long time. And yes, that type of player is underrepresented here, which SHOULD count for something (even if it doesn't mean including underqualified relievers in my mind). Have stated my belief that D. Harvey is not a HOF'er before, scroll up if you care enough to re-read.

I'd think at this point the question is how many we actually want to recommend - we have a strong slate this year and might be good just sticking to that and keeping the recommendations small (maxed at 5) while repeating some version of "The committee finds these players interesting but does not endorse them..." etc.

My suggested slate to proffer to the owners is: Locks Ortega, Paul and Servais with Harvey and Shipley as players of interests.
5/18/2022 4:23 PM
How about we say:

Locks:

1) Jeimer Ortega, LF: 19.5 Importance Score
2) Clarence Paul, SP: 15.8 Importance Score
3) John Servais 2B: 14.4 Importance Score

The rest is up to you, but highly recommended, since it's their last chance and they were solid contenders:

4) Marcus Shipley 2B/RF: 8.0 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
5) Darren Harvey C/DH: 6.7 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***
6) Aroldis Torres 1B: 4.7 Importance Score ***5th year on ballot***

And then mention that, despite their high Importance Scores, we are holding off on:

7) Robert Jacome SP: 7.9 Importance Score
8) Kris Wanatabe SS/2B: 5.1 Importance Score

but plan to very likely recommend one or both NEXT season, after we get some of 5th year guys in.

I, personally -- barring a major objection from anyone here -- think my votes will be this:
  1. Jeimer Ortega, LF: (9 time All Star, 6 time MVP, 652 career HRs)
  2. Clarence Paul, P (277 wins, career ERA of 2.72 with a 1.11 WHIP; 3,541 career SOs!, 9 AS appearances)
  3. John Servais, 2B: (.300 career AVE, very good 2B)
  4. Darren Harvey, C/DH: (.943 career OPS, always on-base, played a decent Catcher)
  5. Marcus Shipley, 2B/RF: (tons of awards, valuable defender, an awful lot of RBIs for a 2B in seasons 19-26)
  6. Aroldis Torres, 1B (2,771 career hits; .309 career AVE; had 5 seasons with above .333 AVE!, six if you count his short Rookie Year)

I am good with:
Ortega
Paul
Servais

Probably also vote for
Wanatabe- I agree with Pimp about how we look at SS.
Shipley

Shipley, Servais and Mark Moore are will be listed as 2B and really have similar stats, but Servais did it in less games. I assume that is why he has a higher score.

This approach makes sense to me, I will very likely vote for the three locks plus Shipley and Harvey

That's a good list. Very good class of 5 this year. Ortega, Paul, Servais, Shipley and Harvey.

I really liked your importance score, bruinsfan911. It seems more useful than straight WAR alone.

Guys I am working (again) on an All-Time team. I have votes from before and have our starting 9 set (listed at the bottom). Here is what I am looking at for 4 bench players and the next 6 that missed out (these are my opinions, if I missed anyone let me know). I added Ortega because he was not included in the vote from before and deserves a shot to make the team for sure. I do not want this to take up to much time for people so that is why I put down my thought and we can discuss instead of voting for everything like before. I will start working on pitchers also.

I’m good with those 4. Thanks for doing this!

We need a catcher and a skilled infielder (min 1 ea.) for the bench. I'd be fine running with Velasquez being the utility player, but who would be the backup Catcher? My Top 7 guesses are as follows ... please everyone vote on their top two or three so we can narrow this down:
  1. Charlie Marte - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=8730097
  2. David Feng - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=6750219
  3. Fautino Saenz - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=7829991
  4. Dan Porter - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=1442173
  5. Jose Viriato - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=2979278
  6. Bruce Sandberg - C? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerRatings.aspx?pid=3573638
  7. Yeico Johnson - DH? https://www.whatifsports.com/hbd/Pages/Popups/PlayerStats.aspx?pid=6113802
Seriously, I am not sure WHO should be the backup catcher, but we ought to include ONE of these guys despite the inherent value in some of the other 1B/LF type options.

Stick, when we voted before Sandberg was 2nd....it did not include Saenz though, and Johnson was not included as well because he is listed as a DH, but we could include him for sure. I personally think it would be down to those three. Here is my order.

1. Yeico Johnson - DH
2. Bruce Sandberg - C
3. Fautino Saenz - C
