Assuming you have a 47% chance of winning a series.......     .53^12=.05% chance of losing 12 series in a row. Not really any different than a mediocre team losing 12 games in a row during the season. Happens.

amy...I thought MY dismal playoff record was bad, (no WS - only 2 or 3 second rounds) but 0-12 in the WS would be REALLY
frustrating.

BTW I don't think 0-12 in series is the same as an 0-12 game streak (not sure of the math, though)

Amy, assuming the chance of winning any game in a series is 50%, the chance of winning the series is 50%.  And if a team had a 50% chance of winning a regular season game, the chance of losing 12 series in a row would be the same as the chance of losing 12 regular season games.

I imagine it's not the same, for the following reasons:

1. 12 game losing streaks are not that common, and don't usually happen to good teams.  A team that's made it all the way to the WS is almost always a good team. 

2. Losing 12 games in a row means you've been swept by a few teams.  It's possible your team has come up against a few consecutive teams that are just flat out better; the chances of a WS team meeting 12 consecutive superior opponents would have to be much lower.  

3.  Losing 7(!) of the 12 series after being up 3-0 is just bizarre.  I've been in 72 World Series.  I've come back from 3-0 once, and never lost after going up 3-0.  To me, those 7 3-0 collapses are even freakier than the 0-12 record.

I would like to think that my success in the WS has been to skill, but I think zubinsum is right about the odds.  I guess I am just on the other end of it.  My streak of 9 for 9 (13 for 13 with TOCs) might come to a close real soon.  Im tied 3-3 facing Milacki in game 7.  I'll see if my luck runs through.

Agree on #3.

Disagree on #1.  While a team that's made it all the way to the WS is almost always a good team, the same is true of its opponent.
