High Cap Leagues Topic

I'm just wondering, what are some common strategies for the higher cap leagues (140+)?

At lower caps, I generally go with xbh teams or speed teams but it seems like I can't get away with Ruth and other hr hitters at 140M.

The amount of players that will succeed will greatly decrease at 140M and above.

But do teams that generally go the longball work better? I feel xbh works better at lower caps but then again, at higher caps, I feel I'm going to see alot of WJ, Cy young, and Pete Alexander who doesnt give up the longball.

You don't have to have home run teams and many teams succeed without power heavy lineups, particularly if the leagues feature older pitchers. I'll often go with doubles teams and put them in a park that limits homers and is double friendly. You'll need more innings from your starters since the lineups will be much better. OBP is still very important to work those pitch counts.

I just won 106 in a 140M OL style league with a HR strategy. So yes, it does work, but its not an easy strategy because you see a lot of deadball pitchers.

Here is proof that a HR can work in a 140M cap. This is the 106 win team. I used GABP.

I dont think 255 is a joke, just different than other leagues. Often there are many same players in the lineups but usually the managing and switching matters more. All teams are good so you just have to get the high AVG guys out of the game late and replace w/ good defense if you have a lead.

In the medium caps, you get a lot of copycat (Caruthers) teams.
6/6/2009 12:22 AM
I would think that a HR strategy team would not require strictly HR hitters just based on the total HR hit, but the best HR/AB# players available that fit your other requirements.

I do agree that HR built teams could struggle in TOC's...there are too many deadball pitchers and/or HR suppressing parks to deal with. That's not to say that HR based teams can't win a TOC...but I would think it would be difficult.
6/6/2009 1:02 AM
At 255 my biggest secret is to draft all of those little 150 PA guys who hit like .450/.900/17,000.000. Cedeno, Williams, Shane Spencer, etc. Maybe everyone else does this too I dunno, but you end up amassing a ton of really quality PA with them.

The high-cap king is el birdo. Go find some of his teams and analyze them. I don't think you'll find a better way to dope out this question.

I'm still trying to get a grip on this game. 23 teams .. No playoffs .. only one team played .500. I like $255 mill leagues.

My topic is about pitch counts & IP ...

With $255 mill you can get quality players and I usually get 10, and lately 11 pitchers. I've been slowly lowering the pitch counts and IP .. in hopes of getting strong performances with 3-5 pitchers per game. I've switched my thinking so much I think I'm confusing the issue. ( Nothing is really working ) I am finally getting some 15-20 game winning starters. But my relief situation is a mess.

Also, I put my Starters @ ANY, on Inn Avail. Long Releivers also @ ANY. Setup at 7,8, with my closer @ 9. Always set Closer @ closing situations only.

Help !

The thing is, you can't get away from power in higher cap leagues as the players with high avg and obp generally come with power. Only a couple of the elite offensive players are homerun light (cobbs, joe jackson, tip) while a majority are power heavy (ruth, mantle, etc.).

T;

When I saw your quote I thought I would see if I could field a winner at 160 without a whole lot of power. That team is shown below. Let me know what you think.

Hey, dtownlove10 ... what type of pitcing did you have to win 106 games, with that lineup? You spent a lot on hitting. Wondering what the pitchers were. Did you just outscore everyone ?
12/6/2009 2:34 PM
My Rotation was -
'12 Walt
'08 Joss
'14 Dutch Leonard
AAA Spot Starter (probably started 10-15 games)

Not sure about the bullpen-
Cisco was in there, probably McQuillian. I went with guys who had given up 0 real life HR's since I was playing in a +2 HR park.
