I don't think you can simplify it that much. For one thing, names mean nothing in the sim. Nothing. You can say Wilt, but to a newbie, they don't know that you mean 66-67 Wilt. They might think 50ppg Wilt or a different version. The 66-67 Wilt is probably the best player in the sim, but if you don't understand why, you will build a **** team around him. If you don't understand why, you will probably use a different version, and almost no other version of Wilt is as good as some of the best versions of Kareem, Shaq, Dwight, and a couple of others.
Another thing: role is important. I consider both Jason Kidd (09-10) & Steph Curry (15-16) as upper tier PGs, yet they are at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of usage, which means you build very different teams with them. One you build around; the other is someone you use to build around someone else. Thus it seems odd to put them in the same category.
I also disagree with some of what copernicus is saying. While I don't always believe in playing a player at the smallest position they can be played at, it is a good rule of thumb. Some guys like KG have so-so seasons that are 100% at SF but have better seasons IMO at PF (07-08, for example). If you're playing in a draft league, maybe you take the lesser season at the 3 because the better seasons are lower minute & not worth taking as high in a draft, but they are perfect for more open rule leagues. I almost never use Curry (15-16) at the 1 because he has relatively low ast% for the position.. so unless I'm using someone with higher ast% at another position, he's a 2 to me. And there are absolutely reasons to run Lebron at the 4 (3rd best record in wis history had him at the 4). That might be an extreme example, but it's a valid strategy and worth noting as people use it.
I applaud the effort... I just think you need to refine things a bit more. Usage & specific roles are the two most defining aspects that will mess any attempt to categorize simply by position.
