Player Review Phase 1 - Salaries Topic

So far I have

- Raise weight on rebounding
- Raise overall

I will try to pull down the data for how many teams are using each player record and add that to the next version of the spreadsheet.
and don't forget please raise the weight of guys that have high usage% plus high eFG%.  Ray Allen, Dana Barros, Peja, Barkley.  These guys are absolute killers in the current sim.  Also keep an eye on the 3 pointers made.  A guy who takes 400+ 3-pointers is MUCH more valuable than a guy with the similar stats who takes 80 3's.

Any player that has a great combination of stats (high asst%, high eFG, high fta's, low to's and low pf's) needs to be exponentially more expensive than a guy that is great at just 1 or 2 of these categories.  PF's and TO's are just as important as the other stats!  Thanks for effort!

One thing that stands out on that Top 100 list: Not including the scrubs, from the 60s & 70s, there's only a few Wilts, 1 Russell and 1 Moses season.

Is there any way to filter that list to include only guys w/ at least a $3.5 or $4 mil salary?

(edit: I miss using and playing against the old guys, whatever happened to Logo, Big O, Elgin, Hondo, Dr. J, etc)
The answer to this is...the percentages made them worthless.

And fwiw, I'm not thanking seble for only beginning to discuss players when he promised them more than 3 months ago...let's keep things in perspective gentlemen...still no changes have been made, and the damage has probably already been done.

It starts with the first step colonels

seble:

defensive rating - are there plans to work on this?  Originally you said there were.  In the .zip we downloaded, everyone's DR is the same as it is currently.  Again, I think you simply take def reb% out of the equation and this should take down some radical & ridiculous players a bit (like 08-09 troy murphy, 08-09 Zach Randolph)

"why couldnt you raise the value of offensive characteristics without lowering the value of defensive ones? the problem has been the imbalance - i.e. not that defense costs too much but that it costs too much  relative to offense"

This.

This appears to have been missed

Agreed

I concur with the general consensus:  rebounds underpriced, overall salaries at the top end way too low.

Running a few formulas in Excel:

Average old salary of all players: $2,519,739
New: $2,620,389
Overall 3.99% increase in salaries

Average old salary of top 10%:  $6,505,367
New:  $5,959,052
Overall 8.40% decrease in top 10% salaries

Biggest % increase:  68-69 Randy Mahaffey's salary jumped from $272,212 to $1,015,720 - a 273.14% increase.

Biggest % decrease:  64-65 Wilt, from $7,235,221 to $4,503,611 - a 37.75% decrease.  You could couple him with the 96-97 Rodman and have 3,734 minutes at the C position covered for $7.5 mil.

I should have a new version for you guys on Monday with increased weight on rebounding and an across the board increase.

Seble, will there also be a change to any of the sim engine logic concurrent with the salary adjustments?  If so, it might be pertinent to the salary adjustment question.

For instance, currently 3P% are simulating at higher rates than real life, which of course is one reason the three point shooters are so popular now.  One way to balance it out is to raise the cost of three point shooters, but another way is to tweak the sim so that the percentages come back down to earth.

The other massively effective stat right now is offensive rebound percentage.  Theoretically, a team loaded on the offensive glass with, say, Moses, Rodman, and Barkley would be susceptible to fast breaks the other way because they are hitting the o-boards as opposed to getting back on D.  If the sim were adjusted to make heavy offensive glass units weaker against up tempo offenses, then that might be another way to address the disparity besides adjusting salaries.

Another common sentiment seems to be that D is not worth the extra salary it costs in the current sim.  Either the salaries could be adjusted or the sim could be updated so that good defenders actually make a discernible difference against the players they are guarding.  This would apply to double-teams as well.

If there are no plans to update the sim logic, then yes, I think the salaries ought to be adjusted per the inputs in this thread.  But if a sim fix is in the works, then salary adjustments could have the unintended consequences of a double-whammy.

In any event, looking forward to the updates.

If that overall increase can be tied to a combo of usg% and eFG% that would be great.  I think this is what felonious what asking for and a several people agreed.  Please let me know if I'm incorrect.

No engine changes at this point.  One possible reason that shooting is up could be underpriced assists.

They're weighted separately in the formula, but both pretty heavily.
