The more American voters see of Donald Trump, the less they like him. Even as Trump gets closer to seizing the GOP nomination, he gets less and less popular, with nearly two-thirds of the electorate viewing him unfavorably. Steven Shepard reports:

How bad are Trump’s image ratings? The HuffPost Pollster average of recent national polls puts Trump’s favorability at only 31 percent, while 63 percent view him unfavorably.

That’s a notable decline from late January, on the eve of the first votes in the GOP nominating process, when Trump’s average favorability rating was 37 percent, with 57 percent viewing him unfavorably.

Not bad—32 points underwater. We're actually betting he can do even worse if he makes it to the general election. But it does pose a challenge for Trump as he heads into contests in the next 17 states: The lower his numbers sink, the less likely he is to secure the 1,237 delegates necessary to avoid a contested convention.

That’s a win-win for Democrats. What would you guys prefer: Contested convention, or Trump as the sure nominee?

At first, Trump tried deflecting. “It’s a problem we have to decide on,” he said. “But you’re for banning it,” followed Matthews. “You say you want to ban it. What’s that mean?” “I am pro-life, yes,” replied Trump. “How do you ban abortion?” asked an unsatisfied Matthews. “How do you actually do it?”

Trump, who has seen sinking poll numbers with women voters, then suggested the country should ban abortions even if it means a return to unsafe “back alley” procedures. “You’ll actually go back to a position like they had where people will perhaps go to illegal places,” Trump said. “But you have to ban it.”

After Trump tried to steer the conversation to how Matthews feels about abortion as a Catholic, the MSNBC host again asked if women who have abortions should be punished. “The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment,” the businessman said. “For the woman?” inquired Matthews. “Yeah, there has to be some form,” Trump answered.

You should hope it's a contested convention. Dull Hillary is no spring chicken in the favorability department.

She's at 40% favorable and 55% unfavorable...... And trending the wrong way. In January Clinton was at 52% favorable and 42% unfavorable. While Trump had a 6 point rise in unfavorability since January as your article states, they failed to mention Hillary's 13 point rise in unfavorability during that same time span.

"If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman," Trump said. "The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed -- like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions."

The media is trying their best to stop the Trump Train though.
