I just think that too many politicians' economic plans, for both parties, are based on coming up with ways to "bring back manufacturing jobs." I'm not sure there's even much hope for a new 6k plant in every state in the next 10 years, and if there were it would probably only cover the natural growth of the work force in that time frame anyway. We need economic roadmaps that focus less on avoiding importing goods and focus more on exporting services. That's a lot more abstract and we understand how to do it far less well, but it's probably the way towards sustainable economic growth for at least the next few decades.
To start with, you could focus on improving and promoting various regions of the country for international tourism. I'm guessing we could easily increase GDP more than quite a few 6k manufacturing plants with coordinated, Federally-supported efforts to increase foreign tourism within the United States. Then maybe you work on increasing the international market share of US legal services, architectural and construction, banking, etc.
