And my point is that perception isn't reality.

And everyone else's point is that you are incredibly dense.

Nobody votes based on reality.  They vote based on their perception.  So which is more important, from the politicians' point of view?

How are you not getting this?

Reality should absolutely still be more important to politicians. Otherwise they'd end up pandering to the loudest idiots.

Oh ****...we're all going to die.

Lol.... The idiots are who they DO pander to. Have you ever seen a political ad leading to election day? Almost 99% of either sides ads are false accusations or half truths regarding their opponent.

Perception.

LOL.   "Yeah but politicians shouldn't say things they don't mean to get elected.   That's just not right!!!"

BL in his ******* retarded fantasy land.

Republicans HAVE tried to pass economic and job bills but they have been blocked by Harry Reid.... Reality. The Republicans don't have a plan.... Perception.

Please point out where I said that.

I said they shouldn't ignore reality to pander to idiots. Otherwise we end up with a bunch of science deniers and birthers in congress.

In the end, though, politicians are now almost forced to pander to the ravening voter base, support the view that virtually every plank in your party's platform is irrefutably correct, because that's what voters want to hear.  That's the only way to compete in primaries.  This is ultimately the result of the modern proliferation of access to news.  On the surface it seems great, with easy access to all kinds of opposing viewpoints.  The reality is that this makes it totally unnecessary for a conservative voter to ever read liberal opinions, and vice versa.  Selective news access is so easy now, and you just have to look at where the links doug posts come from, or the links bad_luck posts come from, to see why politicians are less and less likely to move toward center.  It makes it painfully easy to play off popular perceptions and ignore harsh realities, because nobody your voter base listens to is going to call you out on it.  Not sure what the solutions would be, though.

The solution is to rip apart the fallacy that all men are equal and that each vote carries equal weight.

If the voting public was forced to have at least a basic understanding of the issues, we'd have better results.   While this returns us to some sort of Jim Crow Law society, it would be better for the country if a simple test had to be passed in order to vote.  Then we'd get past the "Repubs hate poor people" and "Libs just want to spend your tax money" messages and politicians would be forced to actually address real issues.

As it stands, there's no reason for them to do anything but reinforce voter beliefs.

Here's the liberal spin on your solution: "By forcing people to take and pass a test, you'll be disenfranchising the less educated people.  It's another attempt for the Republicans to control and influence the voting process".

Because that's exactly the spin they're already using on the topic of voter ID laws.
