I'm going to need a Grad Transfer player for this season, because I'm going to be below 19860 minutes. Anybody else going to need the supplemental draft this season for low minutes? If you're not going to do a supplemental draft this season, then let me know now because it will effect my last pick. It's part of the rules, so I was planning for it, I just want to clarify before I pick.

Is the grad transfer pick for having less than 19,860 minutes mandatory or optional? and does it have to be the low minute player that's replaced, or can it be any player you choose to replace on your current roster as long as the grad transfer replacement player gets you over 19,860 minutes?

the grad transfer was intended for the 2nd and subsequent drafts.

Here's the rule from page 1:

• ‘GRAD TRANSFER’ – IF you have a player who missed one of his 4 scheduled seasons: he can ‘Red Shirt’ and the Franchise can draft replacement in Supplemental Draft (‘Grad Transfer’ player for one season) – the injured player does not get a 5th year w/franchise. IF your franchise does not have 19860 minutes: Franchise can draft replacement in Supplemental Draft (‘Grad Transfer’ player for one season). The Franchises Low minute player for that season will be a ‘Red Shirt’.

It's pretty clear that the lowest minute player must be the one replace by the Grad Transfer. The use of "can" instead of "will" or "must" implies it's optional.. (FWIW), I don't see anything that says the rule doesn't apply to Season 1. Personally, I wouldn't want a team with a shortage of minutes being an automatic W for others. I'm sure the Commish will rule shortly, but I know he was busy and away from this most of yesterday, so it might not be immediate.

maybe so, but it's also possible to draft less than 19,860 in the first draft too
