I had pretty much the same strategy as everyone else - draft as much good deadball pitching as possible at the beginning of the draft. Of the years avail to me at my lower position, I thought 1914 was it. I could take the Red Sox, which I knew was a good hitting team and get 600 decent IP with Dutch Leonard being my ace. Then as a last pick, take the Whalers and Claude Hendrix - giving me almost 1000 dead ball IP with two #1 SP.
Even though I only had one hitter I liked in Tris Speaker, I wanted the third round to still be about pitching, especially given the DH. Calhoop had also picked the Red Sox and he was picking before me in round three - and I was certain he'd take the year I wanted. Instead, he went with 1986 to take Clemens and then segue into the Astros for Mike Scott. I thought I completely lucked out and I took 2002 to nab a Pedro and Derek Lowe's .98 WHIP as my fourth starter. It also gave me a cheap Manny and a Nomar. Pitching was done after round three.
The last two rounds were about finding good Red Sox hitting years. 1960 gave me Runnels at 2nd and a Ted Williams. 1950 gave me another three hitters who all hit over .300 with good defense.
My hitters are at .314 with .887 OPS and my pitchers are at 1567 IP with .96 WHIP. I'm high on this team, but I feel like with 1914 dropping to me and 2002 being available, I kinda lucked out a bit.
