This will be my 4th consecutive season in Hilltop Park. In previous seasons we have been fortunate to get positive offensive production from our 1st round draft picks. Last season, although we did draft our entire starting line-up in the first round, we were nearly shutout on pitching and only got our #4 and #5 SP's (326 IP's) which ultimately led to a starting staff with 3rd round pick '72 Gaylord Perry as the ace. After almost writing the season off, Perry emerged as a true ace and posted a 22-11 record (41 G/GS) and a 4th place finish in the AL CY voting.
I underestimated Perry's effectiveness in Hilltop but I think his high available pitch count really made the difference. He was actually better in Hilltop then on the road which is surprising for a 1.14 park factor. But I think his performance supports the idea that the late round picks are just as important as the 1st round picks are.
