Pitch Rating Evaluation Topic

When doing my evaluations I evaluate on a 0-100 score basis.  So control + vL + vR + Vel + FB/GB + Pitches are all assigned a certain percentage that adds up to 1 (or 100) and multiply and sum.  I have a different formula to get one score for pitches.  I was curious if someone wants to get with me to brainstorm on a better pitch evaluation score... for instance if you just average the pitches (that have a rating above zero) two pitch relievers frequently have a much higher score than a 4 or 5 pitch starter.  The thought being that 4 80 pitches is better than 2 80 pitches.

Any one want to discuss, we can share on here or you can sitemail me...

I use a formula to evaluate pitchers based on 2, 3 and 4 pitches.    Then I group them up, based on stamina, to determine who can be a SP.    Then, after picking my SP, I re-group the rest as RP and make my determination on the remainder of the staff based on the 2, 3 pitch totals.

The base of my formula starts with the total value of the pitches divided by 5 plus the average.

I use a percentage on each pitch that adds up to 100. On a 5 pitch pitcher the 1st pitch is 55% and the last is 5% on a 2 pitch guy the 1st pitch is 65% and the second pitch is worth 35%.Not sure if it makes sense but I am used to it.

When you state 1st pitch, 2nd pitch, etc - are you determining them in the order they are shown or taking the highest rated pitch as P1, 2nd as P2, etc?

I just look at them, all calculations are done in a split second in my head.  Play long enough and you know who will do what for you, taking into consideration your D, his ratings, the ballpark and your O.

Do you give extra consideration for true knuckleballers?

I currently evaluate pitchers on an above avg/avg/ below avg basis in key categories, but a formula sounds a whole lot more efficient. I do have a couple of questions though, first: what do you think an average durability rating for starters is ?, second: would one of you be kind enough to site mail me an example of a formula ?

I've just taken over a team in need of a major rebuild, and an answer to one or both would be quite helpful. Thanks!

Avg DUR/STM for starters is what works within your staff.    A SP must be set at 40 pitches minimum.    So, for me, his stamina needs to be low 40s.   Some say "That's caraazy!!!" and won't use less than 70.  I've seen owners use mid-30s.

Not many people will give up their formulas.   VR is more important than VL.   P1 is more important than P2.   Some swear control is more important than any.

In order of importance for me: 1) Control, 2) Pitch 2, 3) Pitches1+2+3, 4) vL+vR, 5)Vel+GB, 6) Gut feel, or as rangerup puts it, "calculations are done in a split second in my head".

ok thanks. that's pretty helpful in terms of what I need to do. One more question though, how would you put things like ballpark effects, defense and offense into a formula ?

I don't.   Those variables would be the same for all my pitchers.   If I'm in a HR+ park, I put more value on GB and velocity.  But it applies to all my pitchers.

for the 0-100 scale, what do you consider to be ML quality ? I have devised a similar formula, and I was thinking around 70 or 75, but I was just curious what standard you used.
