D3, Season 66 Topic

Last Night
Emory 67   #7 Trinity 56
Emory was able to open up a double digit lead in early in the first half and managed to stay in front all the way until Trinty tied the game at 51 with just under seven minutes left in the game.  From then on, Emory couldn't miss and went on a 16-5 run to finish off the upset.  Emory and phalla got balanced scoring with four starters in double digits and they move on Sewanee in the all-East-division University conference semifinals.  Trinity and bobmeyer will head home to wait and see what seed they get in the NT.

Also considered: #11 Johnson and Wales handled S. Vermont 72-61, #1 Millsaps rallied in the second half to get past Louisiana 59-48, and #2 Greensboro cruised past Palm Beach Atlantic 79-68.

Sim blowout watch: Westfield St. missed out on covering by a single point, getting blown out by #14 Tufts 57-102 while Wartburg had no trouble covering against #3 Buena Vista 64-92.

GotN
#8 Susquehanna (24-3)(zeuspole) vs #5 Elizabethtown (24-3)(mts2)
Obviously with all the conference tournaments into the final four there are a lot of very good games on tap for tonight.  It was close but I'm going with this Commonwealth conference semifinal battle of ranked teams.  Elizabethtown won their regular season match up on the road by 5 points and they're favored by 4 points tonight.

Also considered: #13 W. New England vs #11 Johnson and Wales and #15 Howard Payne vs #22 Texas Lutheran

Sim blowout watch: While it's easy find solid game of the night candidates, there aren't many sims in danger of being blown out.  We'll go with the interestingly-named Coe getting 35 points against #3 Buena Vista.

Last Night
#7 Susquehanna 81   #16 Elizabethtown 69
After a very close first half Susquehanna nursed a small lead for most of the second half until an offensive run pushed the lead to 10.  Elizabethtown tried to rally a couple times down the stretch but couldn't get the lead under 6 and they ended up falling by 12.  Susquehanna and zeuspole move up one spot in the rankings and get the "reward" of playing defending national champ Penn St. Altoona in the conference finals.  Elizabethtown are still in line for what right now looks like a 3 seed in the NT.

Also considered: #13 Howard Payne came from behind late to edge Texas Lutheran 94-90 and advance to the final against #8 Hardin-Simmons.  I'm going to lie and say that I considered Centre vs #1 Millsaps since that turned out to be a heck of game with Centre scoring the shock upset of the top ranked team in the country in OT.  Millsaps made free throws with 3 seconds left in regulation to send it to extra time but Centre got out in front early in OT and held on for the big win.  But that wasn't even the most exciting game of the night.  #9 Johnson and Wales and #20 W. New England played a three overtime thriller with the fightin' spider monkeys from J&W finally coming out on top 109-102.  Regulation ended with W. New England making a tying 3pt shot with 8 seconds left and J&W missing a potential game-winning shot with no time on the clock.  That was tame compared to the first OT session where J&W was up 82-77 with just 32 seconds to play.  WNE then went two missed freebies, offensive board, missed 3ptr, offensive board, made 3ptr to pull to 80-82 with 20 seconds left.  After J&W went a sad 1-4 from the charity stripe the next two possessions Keith Welch of WNE connected on a half-court shot as time expired to send it to yet another extra session.  In the second OT both teams were either nervous or tired and no points were scored in the final minute plus and we ended up tied at 91.  In the third and final OT J&W were able to push out to a small lead and then made their free throws this time to finish off the exhausting 5 point victory.  Wow.  The move on to face a better-rested Rivier team in the final.

Sim blowout watch: On the exact opposite end of the close game scale, Coe did not cover.  Not even close.  They fell by almost twice the 35 point spread against #3 Buena Vista 57-123.

GotN
#7 Susquehanna (25-3)(zeuspole) vs #5 Penn St. Altoona (26-2)(frankgrimes1)
Lots of good conference finals to choose from but I'm going with the defending champ.  PSA swept the season series between these two, time to see if Susquehanna can get some revenge in the post-season.

Also considered: Every other conference final.

Sim blowout watch: None.

Happy Father's Day all!!

Here's a little Final Four analysis to chew on as you get those grills fired up, bait fishing hooks or however you're spending this day.

Midwest Region
This quarter of the bracket looks absolutely loaded, and that assessment has nothing to do with the fact my team resides in this quarter. Millsaps is solid, but should the 1-8 pairing with Whittier shake out, they could have their hands full starting in round 2. Whittier is  a bit of an enigma. Looking blind on paper, I think they're one of the strongest teams in Rupp this season, but they were toppled six times this year, so something isn't translating from ratings to win column. Lynchburg, one of the teams to defeat Whittier this year is also in the top half of this region. On the opposite side of things, a possible John Carroll-Willamette throwdown in the Sweet 16 looms on the horizon and would be worthy of a regional final, assuming undefeated Tufts doesn't crash the party.
Who I like -- While I'd love to call myself, the truth is my team has outperformed its numbers like a boss. I'll go with Willamette, which was one of my preseason WTEFF teams.

East region
Another region that looks to have some talent running through it and No. 1 seed Vassar needs to keep an eye on Centre in a possible round 2 matchup. Centre, like Whittier, is one of those teams that seems to have better ratings than its record indicates. Webster could actually be the strongest team up top. Looking on the bottom half of the bracket, Greensboro and Ursinus appear destined for a Sweet 16 clash for the ages.
Who I like -- Greensboro just looks a notch tougher than the rest of this group of 16.

South region
Compared to the previous two regions, I think the South is a region built more on balance than in-your-face power. Johnson and Wales is a legit No. 1 seed, but I don't think they approach the degree of awe that spasticity's national championship teams of the recent past have contained. Hardin-Simmons adds another perennial Final Four contending coach to the fray in the top half of this bracket while Colorado may be just as good, if not better than either of those two programs. The bottom half of the bracket really looks to set up nicely for defending national champion Penn St. Altoona. US Merchant Marines and lynchmob might have the best shot at knocking them out before that.
Who I like -- Penn St. Altoona. I really expected some fall-off from frank's team this season, but he did a good job of throwing W's on the board during the season. I also really like his position on the bracket and, looking at things, imagine he'll have an edge over anyone he faces until the Elite 8 round.

West region
Susquehanna is always a tough draw, and holding a No. 1 seed will be even tougher to send home. A couple of teams from tough power conferences in Rivier and Emory reside in the top half as well. On the lower side, Wisconsin-Superior is enjoying a good run and has solid rating numbers, but all eyes need to focus on Buena Vista, another of my WTEFF selections.
Who I like -- Buena Vista. It's not a walk-through, but I think they'll enjoy a subtle edge in any pairing they find themselves in within this region.

So that gives us Willamette-Greensboro and Penn St. Altoona-Buena Vista for the Final Four. I'll advance Greensboro and Buena Vista to the national championship and call tilldog to be hoisting the trophy at season's end by narrow margin.

Great stuff bullman -- and always interesting to see where our methodologies agree and disagree as we analyze :)

We usually are fairly similar in our outlook it seems.  We both agree on Greensboro and Buena Vista, and I have Johnson and Wales barely edging out Penn St. Altoona which is your pick.  The only place that we differ is with Willamette (my team interestingly), which I have as only the third strongest team in the Midwest.

Whittier is an interesting case study because two years in a row now I have predicted them to be top 5 material and it has not panned out that way.  I am wondering if the issue is offensive distribution because their leading shot taker by a pretty substantial amount is Moss, who is not an efficient scorer at all.  Hsu and Jester are not that great at scoring either.  If I had that team I would look at Shanley, Sledge, and Hodges for more of the scoring, at least based on their stats.

Last Night
#6 Susquehanna 70   #11 Penn St. Altoona 51
The first half was very close and back-and-forth with Susquehanna holding a slight edge at the break.  Then during the second half, Susquehanna put the defensive clamps down and PSA only scored 2 points in the first eight minutes of the half.  That allowed Susquehanna to build a big lead and they were able to cruise to the conference tourney championship.

The first round of the postseason tourneys is tonight so good luck to everyone playing.

Well, after I do my individual math work to get team strength ratings, I go an extra step when making my picks and interject a human element to them (much the same as at the start of the year when I'll often raise a proven coach over an unproven coach with a slight numerical edge or almost any experienced human coach over a slightly stronger Sim team when making conference favorite selections). Admittedly, I have Penn St. Altoona as one point stronger than any other school in their region, but even if they were a point worse, I'd probably pick them just because I think their half of that region exposes them to less risk than a comparable team in the top half of that region. Millsaps is the team I'm studying, because my number-crunching hasn't cared for them as a frontrunner...very strong, yes, but they've never ranked as a frontrunner, either when figuring the Way-too-early or when I adjusted for the season and ran the NT analysis. Obviously they've dominated like a boss this season and WIS tabbed them No. 1 preseason, so interested to see how it shakes out.

Interesting picks.  Will be cool to see how it all works out.  Hoping I can finally bring it home with Millsaps - starting to feel like the Buffalo Bills with this team (I'm 0-4 in national title games).

I haven't been looking at things as closely as years past, so I don't have much thoughts on other teams.  I have a lot of confidence in Buena Vista and Greensboro this season and see them as very solid picks for the final 4.

Interestingly, I tried to snag some of Whittier's recruits from afar a few season ago (English and Hsu) but quickly realized there was no chance due to the distance factor.  I'm hoping, if we meet up in round 2, to show those recruits they made a big mistake.

Also curious to see if University can catch up to Great NE conference RPI.... not looking good though.  I think this will break our 2 year streak, if memory serves me right.

Round 1 roundup -- Midwest Region

#1 Millsaps rolled out to a 54-22 halftime lead to stomp upstart Illinois like a narc at a biker rally 91-53. That sets up a highly-anticipated Round 2 contest with #25 Whittier, a 64-56 victor over Mt. St. Mary. After a tight first half, Whittier jumped to a seven point lead early in the second half of play. MSM never got closer than two points the rest of the way.

It was a clash of styles when Colby-Sawyer's -5 went up against the +5 of #13 Lynchburg in the second half. Lynchburg already had a 40-33 midgame lead and it only got larger on the way to an 87-64 win. They'll meet #21 W. New England tonight. WNE held on in a yo-yo game where they kept getting double figure leads, only to give them away and allow William Paterson back into the contest. 76-73 was your final.

#23 Texas Lutheran scored one for the double-digit seeds winning 77-74 over Utica as the No. 11 seed in the Midwest. Tonight they get #5 John Carroll, a 76-72 winner over Kalamazoo. The final margin is a bit deceptive, JC was leading by double figures with 48 seconds to play.

Wittenberg handed Tufts its first loss of the season, 55-49 in a mild 7-10 upset on the bracket. Albert Aron with 23 pts, 7 reb, 5 stls for Witt. Tonight they get #8 Willamette, a 72-62 winner over Hamline. Eleven 3's kept Hamline in striking distance, but they couldn't overcome 56.5% shooting from the floor by the No. 2 seed.

(Sorry gang, was going to do everything at once, but I just got called away for half an hour or so. I'll get the other regions up ASAP)

Round 1 roundup -- East Region

Top-seeded #4 Vassar was a 90-78 winner in a game that was nowhere near that close. Leading 42-33 at the half, Vassar pushed to a 25-point lead six minutes into the second half. The lead stayed at 20+ until Cortland made a run in the final 4:30 for modesty's sake. They get S. Vermont, the winner of the 8-9 coinflip game. S. Vermont did all its damage in the first 20, holding Centre to 15 first-half points en route to a 67-53 romp.

#14 Webster had no troubles against Simpson, prevailing 78-62. Now they have to worry about Wentworth. The 13 seed picked as a WTEFF selection flashed some spark that was missing in a 22-8 regular season by upsetting nationally-ranked Howard Payne 89-86 behind 60.4% shooting from the floor. Luther Gillis' trey with five seconds remaining was the game-winner for Wentworth.

#10 Ursinus had zero troubles with Connecticut, rolling 81-56. Carl Oliveira's 23 points played a big role in that, as did the 15 points in 13 bench minues from Edward Willman and a defense that forced 21 turnovers while allowing just 34.4% shooting. They'll meet #17 Elizabethtown, which had only slightly more trouble advancing 78-54 past Catholic. One number pretty much tells the tale -- 28. That's how many turnovers Elizabethtown forced, including 16 in the second half as they transformed a 30-25 midgame lead into a blowout.

Unranked St. Joseph's (ME) rallied from seven down at the half to win 62-61 on Ryan Jean's bucket from the wing with 2 ticks remaining. Memories of a 9-for-17 night at the FT line will haunt Chapman this offseason. That gets St. Joe's a date with #2 Greensboro. My call to win it all looked in fine form in a 93-60 beatdown of Illinois Wesleyan. John Albrecht stepped off the bench to go 8-for-15 from downtown, part of a 24-point performance that needed just 22 minutes of reserve floor time for Greensboro.

South Region

Naturally, the region I said was based on balance played out exactly as the bracket was drawn up on opening night. It started up top as #7 Johnson and Wales brought the pain to overmatched Babson 108-59. As ET would say..."Ouch!" Bryan Davis with 25 points for JW as Spider Monkey fans went bananas. Hoping to fare better tonight is Denison, the 78-64 winner over Case Western. The 15-point disparity in points at the foul line tells the tale as CWR was just 60-for-11 to Denison's 21-for-31.

#12 Hardin-Simmons found itself in a footrace against Eureka, but held on for a 94-88 win. Herschel Lord has 21 points off the bench for HS. Eureka's Adam Ryan and Bradford Davis combined for 48 points in the loss. Next up is #15 Colorado, which took the defensive route to a 63-51 win over Otterbein. Impressive stat of the game -- the two teams combined for just 17 turnovers in the game, including only five in the second half as Colorado pulled away from a 29-28 halftime lead.

#20 Emory and Henry had to work extra for a 74-72 win over Christopher Newport. CN missed a shot and a tip attempt for the win in the final seconds of regulation. Shawn Ellison canned a pair of FT's with a second left in the extra period to give E&H the win over the collapsed 3-2 zone. Tonight, it's a date with #11 Trinity, a 74-57 winner against Suffolk. An 11-for-21 night from long range, combined with a plus-9 advantage in the rebounding department tipped the scales in this University vs. GNE showdown.

US Merchant Marines did not allow a Manchester player to score in double figures in its 82-56 opening round rout. I wonder if it caught the attention of defending national champion, #9 Penn St. Altoona, which led by just 2 points with 8:11 remaining before a 17-2 run provided the daylight in an unispiring 78-58 win over CCNY.

West Region

#6 Susquehanna put foot to *** early and often in doing what a No. 1 seed should do, rolling 92=64 past Carnegie Mellon in the opening round. Check out Chad Hagins' 28-point, 11-board night in just 25 minutes of work. Next up is #24 Dickinson, which survived 84-76 in overtime over Defiance. both teams had cracks to win it at the end of regulation and came away empty. In the OT, Dickinson built a quick 9-point cushion to remove further drama. Robert Gardner had 29 points for Dickinson, one better than Steve Konen's 28 for Defiance.

Rivier outscored North Carolina Wesleyan 12-5 over the final 2 minutes and change for an 88-81 victory in what was a nailbiter throughout much of the 40 minutes. Aaron hendrick had 24 for Riv while William Mikel had 27 in just 20 minutes in the losing effort by NCWC. Now they face Emory, a 65-54 winner over Old Westbury. Down 2 at the half, Emory took advantage of opportunities at the stripe and a plus-7 rebounding edge to pull away in the second half.

Eleventh seeded CSU Eastbay ended Wisconsin-Superior's postseason dreams prematurely with a 73-72 win. Superior trailed by as many as 11 in the second half but rallied to take the lead with 3 minutes to play. Arnold Hightower delivered the 3-point dagger at the buzzer for Eastbay and finished with a team-high 18 points. Now bring on #18 Wooster. The Fightin' Scots squandered an 8-point lead with 1:59 to play, but avoided disaster as Peter Hammock's floater from the free throw line tickled the twine at the buzzer, lifting Wooster past Castleton by an 88-86 final count.

Unranked Sewanee gave the University another head-to-head W against the GNE with a 68-53 win over Emmanuel. Sewanee enjoyed a 55.6% shooting night compared to an icy 36% for Emmanuel. The reward is #3 Buena Vista. The Heartland Horror ran circles around Fitchburg St., posting 60 second-half points in a 100-71 trouncing. Ruben Sabia had 23 points for BV, which forced 22 turnovers and held Fitchburg to just 24 rebounds in the game.

D3 Rupp has so many good teams.  I would be shocked if I made the Elite 8, or for that matter, got past Sewanee again tonight.

What a tough division!
