Oh, one last thing about round one that I meant to mention. For the most part, the names that come up in this league are least familiar to me. I may not know much about the player but the name at least rings a bell. However, sinfonian make me do a double take when he submitted Yo-yo Davalillo. Yo-yo?? This demanded an immediate investigation.
Venezuela native Pompeyo Antonio (Romero) Davalillo
played for the original Senators in 1953. The whole of his MLB career consisted of 63 PA between August 1st and the 23rd. Despite a respectable .293 AVG, he put up a dreadful OPS+ of 69. And, yes, he was the older brother of Vic. Yo-yo passed away this February at the age of 84.
As I thought about Yo-yo, I realized I had seen the nickname before. Anthem
, written by William (Sugar) Wallace, is a poem (far better that any I've ever written, btw) consisting entirely of baseball nicknames. It includes Mr. Davalillo. If you've never read it, I highly recommend it.
Thanks to sinfonian for increasing my knowledge of baseball history.
