Somebody has already been hurt in the child porn example...it's one of the dumbest arguments ever seen in this place, and that is saying a whole helluva lot.

OK.  In this very unique vacuum where a person finds child porn in a garbage can, brings it home and watches it by himself, isn't this particular person being harmed?  I'm pretty sure watching child porn isn't good for you, mentally.  In the same way if you watch people being murdered over and over again...it probably messes you up, even if you enjoy it.  Maybe that person is more likely to rape a child if he watches enough of it?

I'm not sure what tec is getting at.
I missed this piece of dumbassery.

Does watching porn making you more likely to rape a woman?
Yes

In that case, seems like that's a "personal freedom" that needs to be reconsidered.

Would seeing gay couples make one more likely to try gay?

I don't know.  I couldn't even imagine watching two gay dudes go at it.  Makes my stomach turn.

Is "trying gay" analogous to rape in your mind?

Why do you believe that it's not harmless?  Who is getting harmed by watching?
Ok, I agree with you, merely watching something on a TV, regardless of what it is, is completely harmless.

If you walk into your neighbor's house and his TV is playing child porn, you watching it harms no one. In the same way that the police watch the porn when collecting evidence.

What's your point?
So you go from this post at 11:19am, in which you say that watching child porn is "completely harmless", to a post at 1:29pm in which you say watching child porn is "harmful".

You're just all over the place today, aren't you?

Please explain how watching child porn is harmful?  Who is getting hurt by the act of watching?
I'm more than happy to clarify once you answer whether or not you think watching child porn is harmful.
For the umpteenth time . . . when the topic of discussion is YOUR beliefs and opinions, my opinion is irrelevant.

Please explain how watching child porn is harmful?  Who is getting hurt by the act of watching?
No one but, for the umpteenth time, the production of child porn is so harmful that any association with it, even if that association is just watching, should be criminalized.

There is nothing at all harmful about gay marriage, even remotely. Which is why it's different.

He's trying to argue that something can still be illegal even if it isn't harmful to anyone else. Which is true. Prostitution and recreational drug use are two examples.

He's using child porn instead because if he used prostitution or drug use, I'd say, "you're right, we should go ahead and legalize prostitution and drug use."

The circumstance is so narrow (someone finds child porn, didnt buy it, didnt produce it, only watches it by themselves) that you can't really say it's harmful by itself but it's still illegal and no one would argue that child porn possession should be legal.

To that I say, simple possession should remain illegal because the production of child porn is so harmful that anyone with any association to it, even simple possession, should face legal consequences.

And that's where it differs from gay marriage. Gay marriage isn't harmful, even remotely. Child porn is.

Probably. You realize that sex with a woman isn't necessary rape though, right?

Possibly it should be reconsidered. There are many who believe it should be banned. I've already described the negatives to watching porn. You haven't give a negative to gay marriage.

To your second question - Maybe it would for some. And?

Well, no.  You haven't.

Unless you consider "I'm pretty sure that it might mess you up mentally, maybe" is what you consider "establishing" something as fact.
If gays are allowed to marry because children were raped, I would venture to guess many would opt not to.

Who is a more stable person, moving forward. Person X, or Person X after watching child pornography?
7/10/2013 11:39 PM
I'm still trying to find the point of comparing gay marriage to watching child pornography.

Hypothetically, if someones child was subject to child porn, wouldn't the parents and relatives and family friends of said child be hurt knowing that many people are watching?

Make your point.

He actually found something that qualified under your "Big 3" for allowing damn near anything that would be repulsive to pretty much anyone with a moral bone in their body.   When presented with it, BL has stumbled, mumbled, changed directions and STFU for the last 36 hours.    "Makes people happy", "Allows more personal freedom" and "Doesn't hurt anyone" are bullshit reasons to makes laws.

This.

As for "watching porn = more likely to rape", I'll go back to my "people are capable of something or they are not" belief.    For those who think you're more likely to rape if you watch porn, you are obviously in the camp of "video games/TV/movies cause people to be more violent."   Say that out loud.   If it doesn't sound dumb, I'd suggest you're not very bright.    Maybe a child can be guided by what they see, adults should not.   Children probably shouldn't be watching porn.

I'm not comparing gay marriage to watching child porn.

I'm exploring BL's "big three" criteria of (a) "it makes them happy", (b) "it doesn't affect others", and (c) "what's the harm" that he used in defense of allowing gay marriage.  He seems to be uncomfortable with applying the same criteria to watching child porn.

So the "big three" doesn't appear to be a "one size fits all" approach to determining what should be allowed and what shouldn't.

I'm trying to figure out what the missing additional criteria is in BL's mind.

I suspect it's "because I said so".  I'm waiting for him to either confirm or convincingly deny that.
