Possible HOFer?! Topic

I was doing research for a theme league tonight & came across Ed Reulbach who pitched mainly for the Chicago Cubs in the early 1900's.

Now, he only won 182 games but had a terrific ERA (2.28) & tons of CG's as most pitchers did from this time frame.

Since this summer's induction ceremony will feature dead players, I say include Eddie!

THE PETER H. ROSE RULE IS IN EFFECT

I was at Cooperstown over Labor Day weekend, 2011.  I was surprised how much Pete Rose stuff was on full display in the museum.

123 ERA+. I'll pass.

He can get in line behind Kevin Brown.

Kevin Brown didn't even stay on the ballot for 1 year! Another pitcher I think has a strong case, don't laugh, Orel Hershiser!

I agree antoncresten, but Selig is kicking the can on his reinstatement. Kind of like Congress & our economy!

I think Pete should be in, but if he is reinstated and inducted before Shoeless Joe, there is a serious problem

Joe Jackson's an interesting case, when you take the Black Sox scandal out of the equation.

He really only played nine full seasons.  His first three seasons he played 5, 5 and 20 games.  And in 1918 he only played 17 games.

One could argue that he falls short of the 10 full season HOF requirement.

Take the black sox scandal out of the equation and he plays full time another two or three years

But he didn't.  You can't put somebody in the HOF based on what they might have done.

If that were the case, then I'll start making an argument for Mark Fidrych.

Addie Joss didn't have 10 seasons and is in the HOF.

Different scenario since he died, instead of being part of plot that marred the game of baseball.
1/27/2013 5:57 PM
The HOF Board of Directors passed a special resolution to waive the 10 year requirement specifically for Joss.  Not sure why.

Shoeless Joe didn't even have 1800 hits. Its hard to argue on his behalf.

I guess it all depends how you view things. Jackson wasn't sick, dead, etc. - He was still healthy and able, so I don't think it's wrong to speculate on what he could have done (similar to guys who missed time in the prime of their careers for military service. If the stories are true, he took gamblers' money (definitely a no-no), but did more than anyone to help that team win the Series anyway. A lot of people from that era considered him to be one of the elite hitters.

This is why stat geeks alone should not decide HOFers.
