Using your rules,

HoJo: .292/.362/.496/-$69K
98OV: .351/.404/.434/+$420K
Is that using performance history instead of normalized numbers?

Yes, compared to average.

I think using normalized numbers is more accurate.

Respectfuly, I disagree.  However, if that suits you just make an additive adjustment:

.286/.369/.558
.344/.409/.419

I think I take HoJo every time. Even with the defense factored in as above, I see HoJo as more valuable than Vizquel because of his SLG% difference. That adds to a higher RC. Even using the more rudimentary OPS, HoJo's defense adjusted OPS is higher than Vizquel's by enough to make more than just a minor difference. Plus his SB% is better and with more steals... So, he's getting extra bases even when he's not more often than Vizquel is and at less cost (CS%).

I don't usually try to steal many bases, even withplayers who can. HoJo was set at 1 all season, batting 4th in between '79 Reggie Smith and '64 Mantle. I got about 50 less DPsthan other guys got with A+ range SSs, and HoJo usually ends up with a lot more -plays than he did in this season. HRs can be a bit misleading, since we tend to get a lot of them against mediocre Ps, and not many when we really want them. The fact that we debate HoJo's value is, in and of itself, proof of the value he presents.

I think often times many people have a bias based on what their team objectives are and the venue that they chose to play in.  I usually chose a Homerun park and try to hit as many Homeruns and steal as many bases as possible and It has proved advantageous, expecially when I am preventing my opponents from doing this. Yes homeruns are usually hit against mediocre teams, but it helps you defeat them more easily and you effectively win at a higher rate against these mediocre teams while I often see other strong teams in close contest against them. A win is a win during the regular season. I usually chose a park where I can maximize my homeruns and chose maximum pitching to hide his defensive flaws, so Hojo becomes a major asset.

Gotta love Hojo. He hits HR power and doubles and steals bases and doesn't make errors. With that said, range is actually more important to me than fielding percentage so I like to replace him defensively late in the game. It also saves on his PAs so you can bat him higher in the order.

I find that minus plays mean that a fielder didn't reach a ball and it became a hit. I'd rather a fielder make an error than allow balls through the infield for hits. Errors don't always turn into runs. Neither do hits, but they are more apt to.

Interesting strategy Crimson. I've done that before too and it's a lot of fun. Problem is getting through the playoffs with HRs. They key is a guy like Hojo also steals bases and hits doubles which is very rare. So he is an asset in away parks too.
