My two best relievers are getting pounded. help? Topic

He wants to keep the 2 playing because he has spent 8.2 million between the 2 of them.  I think their settings are set wrong is all.  I think with a 4 or 5 pull rating and use them as su-b's until they start warming up is the most effective way of using them...

so a RHs was brought in and he pitched 2 2/3 innings?  doesnt that sound broken?  I suppose simmy saw the fact that he was pitching well so it didnt pull him out... but still RHS and LHS to me means they come in for 1 or 2 batters when the timing is right.  And my anecdotal evidence indicates to me that they dont come in in the right circumstances...

So greeny9, you say, "I think their settings are set wrong is all.  I think witha 4 or 5 pull rating..."  Early on in this thread Kevintam posted, "Only cause after spring training I set their call bullpen to 5. and to mop up duty as well for a few games. Reed already with two blown saves in 4 tries, and the other save he gave up 3 ER."

Other than a little mop-up work, he's tried it your way.  It hasn't worked.  Apparently, it's still not working.  You mention that he spent $8.2 million between them, but your solution remains the same...bury them in the nether regions of the bullpen as SU-B's with a 5 pull rating.  That's a waste of money.  So is using them in AAA.  I've seen specialists be successful, you've heard they are broken.  I'm not here to change your mind, however, so we'll just have to agree to disagree.  Kevin, I hope your guys get back on track bud.  GL.

I forgot that he had said he set them to a 5 pull rating. but it seems like this is a case of SSS. the guys should turn it around at some point, their ratings arent that bad. Would I have paid them 8.2? no way, but he has them... gotta work with them, no choice in the matter...

What they're being paid is irrelevant; the $8.2M is a sunk cost.

LHS/RHS is broken because pitchers assigned as one of them get much less IP then a setup even a B.  And from what I understand they dont end up seeing that much more of their preferred batters then if you simply make them setups.
In this post, did you mean "more" instead of "less"?

If a Specialist throws 2+ innings, he probably has decent STA and/or the max pitch count is set too high. If your max pitch count is set to 10 or 15 and he throws 2+ innings, I'd agree that it's broken. If your max pitch count is set to 35/40 for a Specialist, you're defeating the purpose of the Specialist role. I don't think I'd call it "broken" for the pitcher to stay in for 35 pitches if that's what the setting is If that's actually the case).

If simmy needs a reliever in a key moment it would make sense to first take a Specialist. At that point, it would also make sense to leave that pitcher in as long as his STA and pitch count indicate.

Certainly I think if specialists actually worked the way they are supposed to I could possibly see value in them, but they still take a spot in your 25. I think having ball players you dont mind coming in against righties OR lefties is much more valuable. There will be situations I have no doubt where having a specialist or 2 could be handy in this game, but it would be somewhat rare Id think.... Say if you had 2 or 3 SU pitchers who have awesome dur sta, enabling you to leave 2 spots for such specific situation ball players. But I gotta think having an extra speedster on the basepaths, or extra heavy bat would be more beneficial...

That makes sense. But "I see no value in them" and "they're broken" are two very different things. I don't use specialists often, but they do make sense if you have a great arm with lousy STA or DUR. For maximum effectiveness ratings, role & pitch counts all have to work together.

I think this guy falls into a similar category:

http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3189206

He was acquired by my franchise in a horrible trade, by the second previous owner, then given an ugly contract extension by the previous owner.  He's my highest overall rated reliever, so the sim recs keep wanting to put him in at closer.  I have him at a 5 pull rating, and I give him 15 pitches max in any situation, but last season he just set fire to any game situation he entered, even at Triple A.

Looks to me like his overall rating is inflated by his intangible ratings which have nothing to do with pitching, and his effectiveness is really lowered because he has only one good pitch and it's a curveball.  So regardless of his ratings, he's pretty much lucky if he gets batters out.  Sound about right?

Have you tried using him as a RH Specialist? His split vR is solid, and his other ratings aren't bad. Being in the NL, if you can afford having a guy in the pen who only faces a batter, he'd be worth a shot in that role. PC 5/10, Pull 5, and he might work out.

Thanks guys I didnt realize this post has gotten so many comments the last few days. I have since moved my Rule 5 pickup off waivers to the closer role, cause obviously Reed wasnt working out too well. Reed looks like hes been pitching a LITTLE better, getting SOME batters out at least.

As far as me dishing out the dough to the both of them, At the time I thought they were solid pitchers. Its my 1st season, and you better believe I have learned my lesson.

In the meantime they are both still set to 5. And as of now I have no intentions of moving them down to the minors, cause quite frankly I dont think I have any other options down there. But if someone would be so kind as to check out my rosters and who they think could potentially hold his own in the MLs let me know. My first thought would be Alvin Perry down at AAA.

Getting to the point where this is about the only logical thing I can do with him.  Thanks josh.  He got lit again last night, two batters five pitches one groundout one home run blown save.  Guy is basically Kevin Gregg.

I'm a orioles fan. I resent that!

My new closer blown a save. Guy is mike Gonzalez...

If you're an Orioles fan, surely you can't be a Kevin Gregg fan.  (I'm a Jays fan, we had him here.)
