You might've been wrongfully holding a grudge against the wrong guy. Bonds played with the Pirates from 1986-92, maybe Charlie Hayes or Kevin Mitchell (both were on the 89 Giants) didn't turn around because they only answer to their own names.
I may have the year wrong but there was no question it was Bonds playing the jerk.

I assume you know how old your son is.   Under the circumstances you mention, he'd have to have been 10.   That's a pretty big change in the story.  10 year olds shouldn't be crying because they didn't get an autograph.

Maybe he had the wrong visiting team? Not like the Pirates wouldn't have made trips to the Astrodome in those days.

If you can screw up the team or the year, you can screw up the player.  Not saying it didn't happen but maybe it didn't happen like he said.

Nonetheless, it's widely accepted that Bonds was a jerk.   I would say "Maybe Bonds was having a rough day" but then you'd have to assume he had a lot of them.

Of course, none of that has anything to do with what he's done for this one specific family.

I've always been a Bonds apologist, mainly because I'm a Giants fan, and whatever he did, he did to make himself a better ballplayer.  But I never understood why some people want their ballplayers to be their buddies or their role models or autograph-signing automatons.  They owe us their effort and their competence/excellence on the field, not their friendship.  I have a bigger issue with cokeheads and drunkards who aren't performing to the best of their ability because they're wasted... if I pay my money to see the best, I wanna see them play their best.  Once they leave the field, they don't owe me anything but to take care of themselves to play tomorrow.

Sure Bonds was an arrogant ******* off the field, but I loved watching him hit for 12+ years in San Francisco.  Now he's showing up to be a decent guy, as long as it's on HIS terms, which is his prerogative.

Sorry.  He will take his own kid's money, but then he will turn it around and give it to a fan's family?

He needs to do a lot more than that.

1994!!!!  Move on.

He's clearly a horrible human being.  I mean, how were they ever to get by on only $7,500 a month?

IN 1994 DOLLARS!!!!!

Horseshit.   This man invented the home run.

The only performance enhancers he used were hot dogs and beer.
And hookers....loads and loads of hookers.

Is ESPN RACIST!!!!! because they post a pic of a black man and think "Oh, must be a NBA story"?
3/12/2014 8:17 AM
If they thought he was an NBA player, wouldn't his hat be on backwards and he'd have a couple pounds of gold bling hanging around his neck?
