I accidently omitted Limestone College from the rankings. They should be #57, in front of No. Kentucky.

With Christmas villages, it usually starts with model railroading. Then you add a house or two, then a street or lake.  Before you know it, there's no room for the trains!  There's a lot of overlap between railroading and villaging. Almost all serious village collectors learn landscaping techniques from the railroaders.

My own yard looks like crap but I can make a heck of a mountain from newpaper, masking tape and plaster cloth.
