So I've been noticing a trend while doing the offseason bonuses for a long time.....and its kinda bugging me seeing it over and over again to a point now where I feel its now time to bring it up for discussion.  I'm considering seeking league approval on something, nothing too drastic, more of a minor tweak, or who knows, maybe a little drastic.  From day 1, my main concern with the MLD is to keep things competitive, fun and challenging for all of us. I don't want to pick on anyone in particular because truth be told, its a loophole a bunch of MLD GMs appear to be benefitting from it.  (Heck, even my team has benefitted from this loophole that I am considering plugging or semi-plugging.)

While awarding the Non-playoffs(NP) bonus of +3 to Stamina, Shooting and Skating, I've been noticing alot of already highly skilled players on non-playoff teams, who are also receiving this bonus.  Now I realize this is well within the current rules setup which is straight and simple, miss the playoffs, your entire team get this particular bonus.  However I feel it goes against the whole purpose and point of this bonus, well one of them anyway.   The bonus was created for 2 reasons....

1) It was to compensate non-playoff teams whose non-active players did not receive improvements back when the league began.  That changed a year(s) or so ago with a WiS update so that players now improve during playoffs whether they are in them or not.

2) It was intended to assist struggling out-of-playoffs teams by improving their players' skill-wise, with the thinking that the players collectively needed the help skill-wise, to return them back to a competitive level.  Awarding this bonus to players who are already highly skilled, but being "cooked/warehoused" is NOT what I wanted, but currently well within the rules under the current set up.  It doesn't seem right that a Joe Smith with skills like 90ST, 90SH, 90SK....will now be 93ST, 93SH, 93SK because his team didn't make the playoffs.

I would like to consider tweaking this bonus (NP Bonus) or possibly removing it all together.
- if tweaked, we can make it so that no player attribute gets a boost with the NP bonus if it is already at or higher than a certain level. (say 80...or maybe even 70)
(I can't suggest a tweak of having it so that only players who played 20+ in that season get this bonus, simply because the workload in tracking this would be too great, sorry guys)

- if removed completely, its important to note, that the non-playoff teams would still get a bonus in the form of the Bottom 6(B6) Bonus.  Plus, the beloved SC Bonus would still remain.  Has this particular bonus rule become obsolete?  (I hadnt thought it was until I typed out this message)

again I am doing the bonus stuff and again I am feeling this needs to be tweaked.....

this is what I meant by flexing my commish muscles for the overall fairness and enjoyment of the MLD.

I am either going to decide to do either.....

A) Scrap the NP Bonus completely  (B6 and SC Bonuses will still be awarded)

B) (This B idea is just an idea, an extreme idea but an interesting and likely controversial one nonetheless....I realize its not very realistic but it could yield very interesting results and an overall, more competitive and challenging MLD Experience.)
We keep the NP Bonus as it is...HOWEVER, any player skill attribute on any Non-Playoff team, that is 80+, gets deducted 10-20 skill points

I'm not gonna make this decision right away, but I'd love to hear some feedback on this matter.  I do intend to do something "official" about this as soon as the season begins.......I'm leaning more towards option A, its simple and easiest.  We may have just seen the last NP Bonuses to be awarded in the MLD as if opt for the rule tweak, they will not be award at the conclusion of next season.

Option B would be interesting because hopefully GMs would not hold back talent via warehousing...... out of fear they would get nailed by the -20 skill per attribute penalty.
(if skill is already 80+)

To be blunt, this just might be some great outside-the-box-future-planning GMing.  I really think our current bonus setup has a loophole of sorts and it severely outdated with us now in Yr30 of the MLD.  Teams can purposely dress lesser talented and under manned teams, thus holding back and saving talent.... in addition to getting bonuses via missed playoffs ends up turning a lot warehoused players into near perfect players.  The results can be a near perfect squad after a few seasons, that can easily destroy every team it faces.
While I see the strategy and how it works, I gotta be honest and say it feels like a bit of a downer. I personally would like to see EVERY team going for it EVERY season and I hope I'm not the only one.

I've felt the bonuses aren't necessary for a long time.  Yeah easy to say because I very rarely miss the playoffs... but my team hasn't often had anything to do with those bonuses.

A skill clawback on great players - IMO, drastic, complicated, and very un-'natural".

I could argue about this a pile of ways, and most of the points okp brings up are correct.  This has become a league where you're "going for it" or not, and you have to try to time when to go for it for when your strongest competition may not be, if you want to maximize your player assets.  I do not play to create a super-team, but I'd selfishly rather not retire very skilled players for "no reason"... "waste" their prime seasons... I'd at least like to use them for a cup run.

One thing at least that is different from the old MLD, these days you win cups with talent, pure and simple.

SO... I've always compared the MLD with Major Junior hockey.  Players come in as frosh, they develop over their careers, but their careers necessarily run out at a certain point then they must leave the league.  Consequently you see real life teams going through the very real life cycle of growing prospects, bringing veterans together, trading to "go for it", then busting and starting again with younger players.  Real life.

But there is one thing real life has which we don't and that's finite time.  You can't interrupt a real life player's junior career.

We're talking about outlawing warehousing.  Once a player's career starts he must play consecutive seasons till the end of his MLD career, regardless of injury.  A simple solution which would completely change the way we all do business.

The MLD has changed over the years and so have the rules and strategies. We've all had to adapt. I totally agree that it's become a league where teams "go for it" or don't. Where only the highly skilled teams have a chance.

I confess I've been guilty of icing a sub par team to save on talent that I'm developing so I can "go for it". I've done it the last 3 seasons. If the rules change so will my strategy. I think change is good and will only keep the enjoyment of this league going. For the record I'm not against any rule changes (except stat reductions!)...and kind of like the idea of limiting warehousing. It might keep things on a level playing field.

I'll mull it over some, but some initial thoughts:

I'd be against any stat reversal.  That just seems overly harsh and makes playing the game seem punitive.  Dropping bonuses of any and all sorts are fine with me.  Of course, I've never really received any.  :)

Limiting warehousing?  Perhaps.  I was initially wary of the "20 games to be eligible for the playoffs" rule, but I think it's worked out great.  I'm not sure I'd be good with eliminating it, as holding players out is part of the role-play of the league as well as just stat improvement... and it would eliminate just about all strategy.  Luck would become a bigger factor.  But I'm open to ideas to knock down the worst cases.
2/22/2012 9:07 PM
i'm fine with eliminating the non-playoff bonuses.  i don't think they are really necessary.  :>

if however you implement the stat deductions option B, i would likely leave the league.  a team could easily finish with a winning record and miss the playoffs by one point.  and then get entirely screwed by the stat reductions.  it would make it a lot harder for average teams to get better.  :>
2/22/2012 11:00 PM
My bad on the skill reduction suggestion.  It was just something drastic I thought up while I was frustrated.

I think the easy move to make, effective immediately, is to get rid of the team wide +3 Non Playoff Bonus.

If a team chooses to tank purposely, I guess thats their choice.  It'll just take longer for that entire team's players to develop with the teamwide +3 Non Playoff bonus eliminated.

--------------------
Now what to do about warehousing? Or rather limit it somehow...... I think its ok to have some sort of flexibility to groom players.......but some of us, myself included, really go overboard.  I like your idea Damag, about forcing players to play consecutive seasons once they start their careers.  However, I think it doesnt allow for much. if any, "grooming" room..whcih hey, might not be such a bad idea......i'm just so used to having a little bit of wiggle room.  lol

How about adding a retirement criteria of a solid 10 (13 if FP)season career limit?  (no matter the amount of games)  The existing retirement 6 seasons of 20+ GPs, criteria would remain as is.  For example, a player who had his rookie MLD season in season 10, would not be allowed to play as of season 20, he'd be forced to retire at the end season 19 no matter what.  (his 10 seasons would be up)  I dunno, just thinking/typing out loud.

(((I just realized, this would not work very good as the player card don't show rookie season #s for players who have previously been traded.)))

anyone else have any ideas to throw up here?
2/23/2012 11:04 AM
I don't mind doing away with the +3 bonuses, but I think you should get a wider opinion before you change the rule since we only have 6 GM's here talking about it.

I also like your idea OKP that no one at or over 70 in a category gets 3 points for that category, but then again I don't know how hard a job that is for you. Either way I am fine with either of these changes.

As G_M said I don't care for the deduction of points, nor do I really care for forcing an owner to play a guy six straight seasons, that leaves little if any GM decisions.
 Just my 2 cents
