Capital Athletic Conference: Year 12-pres Topic

I think it is WE and luck. I've had seasons with average improvement in the 6-9 range. These last 2 were my first to average double digits. The guy who had Lamont Ducout (or something close to that; the D3 guy who scored 40+ppg) complained that none of his returning players the year Ducout graduated improved. It makes me think there might be an element of PT or shots taken or something else, but I have nothing else to back that up. Magee is the only one that could be considered a disappointment/surprise; he was one of my leading guys in terms of minutes and scoring last year. Who knows?
I like it since it seems to be what I think all improvement in WIS should be, random, but in a logical/predictable direction.
BTW, congrats, Rogue, on the preseason ranking. I think you are the third most senior coach in the CAC now that BMill has moved out, leaving me second-most-grizzled-veteran status to ChrisZ. (I checked -- Urd started in the CAC the same time as Rogue).

I'm happy to have the preseason ranking, but not sure I deserve it. Hopefully, I can live up to the ranking in non-conference play.

The legitimate question is why I didn’t land a guard. The answer is that I blinked.I had a guard I wanted, but rather than be without a dance partner, offered

Gilbert before the 11am time period on the last day.My PG started considering me the same cycle. This will cost me in 2 years. As for Gilbert’s merits, he’s got a

decent chance of being a decent JR and SR.He’ll score on the block and gotten up to the mid-50’s/low 60’s on the glass by then. The WE will cause some offseasonheartache every year, but it’s high enough to improve with PT; though he won’t get much until he’s a junior.

I accidently double-entered MW and Salisbury off.

I really like Margolis. He is "my" type of SF; Cowboys has a tough choice on whether to spend time improving his rebounding, which will show only marginal growth. His defense combined with passable guard skills make him a potential switch to SG vs. teams in a zone to help with defensive matchups. Tapia will be on the short end of rebounding battles with several other freshmen big men in the conference, but has a nice, diverse skill set. Really, pretty similar to my freshman, Gilbert. All in all, this is a nice 2 man class, particularly given his returning guards making these positions those of greater need.

3 Walkons

The bad one here was losing a local C to Franklin (300 miles away). At some point, you need to either drop the gloves and make sure you land the local kid or stay out of

sparring match entirely to ensure that you have the cash to get what’s .

3 WalkonsBoth of these guys will be big rebounders in a couple of years.Yarbrough gives you a PF that you could try to “Pittsnogle.”Urd has an interesting choice whether to develop his PE.Given the new capping of D3 C’s, Jackson will be one of the fastest C’s in the conference as soon as next season.

Whitfield’s pretty nice; if he only had maybe 8 more in PE, I’d be very optimistic about his chances of being an impact player. As is, he’ll be a nice PG.Decker is the type of SF that I avoid, but can work if you understand his weakness.Little is the only guy in this class with much of a chance to be a scorer. That’d be my real worry here.I downplay PE and LP as much as anyone, but someone’s got to get the ball in the hoop.

Anyone think KC was targeting a total rating range or a defensive rating range?Liang is probably the best of this bunch. It’s an interesting DEF gambit, since none of these guys are going to pick up that much ATH or SPD help down the road. With 6 openings, I’d probably try to make sure I got 1 higher ranking guy and then 3 guys of this quality, willing to take some walk-ons; that was how the old coach here landed Hazelton.

Quick conference preview:
North winner: Catholic
South winner: York (Edging Hood)
Dancers: Catholic (3), York (8), Salisbury (16/PIT), Goucher (PIT)
Marymount could slide in; I haven't looked at schedules to see if anyone crippled their SOS so much that they can't get their RPI high enough.
POY: Tosh (Marymount) edging Locklear (Hood)
COY: andrewfrance
ROY: Ridinger (SMM)
1st team:
PG: "Super" Mario Wright (Catholic); edging preseason All-american HM, Gardner (Salisbury)
SG: Edmonds (Catholic); also preseason All-american HM
SF: Cooper (Salisbury); was a preseason 3rd team.
PF: Locklear (Hood)
C: Harbaugh (York) and Tosh (Marymount) are the class acts in the middle; I'll take Tosh.
The irony in picking 2 of my own for 1st team is that no Cardinal has been 1st team since I took over the team. Only 1 has even every made 2nd team (Alan McCray, year 11).

i know i'm not in the conference here but CAC will always have my heart. I see that Salisbury still get no love. No recruiting outlook for them, and I think they are better than PI this year. I wouldnt be suprised to see Kasper or Bailey making noise in the 1st team voting.

As mention in the North summary, there was a ton of rebounding around us.Here was Rogue’s grab from that bag.Terrible defender, but when you will be a 90+ rebounder one day, who cares?

McDonald and Bernard should make a solid backcourt.Bad defensively: time for Hood to think about going back to the zone, but room to develop.Wright can take solace in my boy Gonzalez who entered with a similar REB number but, as if in a Horatio Alger novel, by luck and by pluck he’s a monster as a senior.

What do you get someone with a well-rounded, LP-heavy SF?Why, two more.I think Knopf can actually get his BH up to 30 or so which makes him more my type, but both of these guys have their uses, or should I say use since they are essentially the same guy?
