For my money Pete Dexter is the finest American author we have these days.
Gritty and Real!

Folks should read his great novel "Paris Trout" (which was made into a fine movie starring Barbara Hershey and Dennis Hopper).

Presently I'm reading "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel.
