Capital Athletic Conference: Year 12-pres Topic

General question for some of the old pros in our Conference - when developing players, particularly freshmen, do you tend to give somewhat balanced practice time, or put 20-30 into the key attributes? Also, while I've read that returns on practice time diminish around 30 minutes, does anyone have a differing opinion?
About how much improvement during a season (on average) should one expect from a starter with about 25-30 min a game?
4/2/2006 2:35 PM
Rouge, it really varies. If you are putting 20 to 23 mins. into each O and D, you should expect about a 40 point improvement +/- 3 points for a guy with a decent WE. That is what I typically see. Keep in mind that I practice FT at 14 minutes until they are A+. Freshmen will probably be a little less because you probably need to spend more minutes for study hall.

If you are spending a lot of minutes trying to improve defense (footwork), the numbers will be lower as I find defense the slowest thing to improve. If you are putting a lot of minutes into conditioning, then you generally gain more total points as 3 areas improve when you do this (as long as Ath, Spd, and Stamina are in the range of 35 to 75 to begin with). WE also factors into improvement, as you know.

I try to concentrate on areas that are important for the position AND that are conducive for improvement. Example: rebounding is important for a SF but if his rebounding rating is below say 25, I won't spend more than 10 minutes on it. Same goes for high-end ratings. A C with LP of 87 isn't going to improve very much. Spend the minutes elsewhere unless you have nothing else you want to improve. As a general rule, I believe the law of diminishing returns starts to set in between 20 - 25 points. I would never spend over 25 on any rating unless I had absolutely no other skill worth improving.

Just my opinion.

BMill, thanks for the input. I haven't been putting quite that much into the O and D and I've still been getting only about a 40 point improvement, so perhaps I should be focusing more on O & D.
Also, I've found that ATH and SPD improve at about the same slow rate as DE. Anybody else see that?

They do improve slowly but remember, you are getting a 3 for 1 bonus with conditioning. Each may jump up by 3 or 4 points each, depending on where your stats are to begin with. So for 15 min. of practicing time, you could get a total improvement, including stamina, of 10-12 points. Not too shabby. It would take 20+ minutes to improve LP, Reb, PE, by that much. Just what I have found anyway.

We have 3 teams ranked on 4/07/06. That's quite an accomplishment. Nice going. CAC for life.

Looking back at my predictions
Season Predictions (Year 14)
Dancers:
Big: Saint Marys (#2 seed), Marymount (#7 seed), and Catholic (#12 seed)
Little: York
SMM will probably end up in as a 10 or so; Marymount is looking strong as a 2; I think a 10-12 will be where I fall. Salisbury might end up getting into the PIT.
*I've fallen off the Hood bandwagon until next year.
I think Goucher could sneak in, but will need to split with Urd and me in conference play to get there.
SMM is the must win now team. Marymount has gear for this year, but Tosh leads a solid non-senior core. They can still dance next year.
BMill's been mum on whether this is his CAC swan song. He probably doesn't want all the parting gifts.
All Conference:
PG: Matney (MW). This is a down year for PG's; they are principally pass-first (Cullen from Hood) or SG's trapped in a PG's position. Matney dropped 50+ on opening night, and only 9 a game since, but he can also dish it and there ain't a lot of competition.
Probably will get it. PG play has been that bad.
SG: Sliva (Gallaudet). Am I the only one who thinks of him as Silva? What kind of name is Sliva? Anyway, Turner from York will also be in this mix. Edmonds from CUA is a dark horse here.
I would agree with this pick still as well.
SF: Cooper or Crain? I'll take Crain (MW) who I think will have his minutes stretched and be more productive as the year progresses.
I probably went the wrong way with this one, but it will be close.
PF: Cozart (Goucher). Butler from Marymount is the other real candidate, but I think Cozart's rebounding edge will lead to more and more 2nd chance hoops and points.
Don't much about biology, don't know much about Study Hall... Cozart was an academic casulty. Butler's put together a nice year.
C: Justin Fermin's last dance has been a loud one. He's the obvious POY, looking for vengance after his perceived snubbing by the voters last year. Lonnie Beach is the 2nd best big man in the conference. That's not faint praise, he's a stud.
Right on target here too. Beach has had some big nights, but Fermin's the man.
POY: Justin Fermin (Salisbury). Beach is a stud, but Fermin is definitely the big dog in this pound.
COY: BMill. Wolfe shocked the world by taking home this honor. Maybe it's Urd's turn.
Maybe it is, indeed.
ROY: My mancrush on McCann has been previously noted. Staats and Rohe have had nice starts to their year, but as McCann's IQ catches up, his stats will continue to ascend from their already solid levels.
Gary Stokes got the minutes and will win this award.

You are correct andrew. This is my final season. I'm in India right now so getting internet time is proving to be challenging. My Johnson and Wales team has proved to be the stronger of my 2 DIII teams in this world. I'm hoping that they can advance because I don't see SMM getting very far. It's been a pleasure playing in this conference. Best of luck to everyone in the future and thanks goes to andrew for his extra work. You made the conference that much more enjoyable.

That first round CT loss squashed any chance I had of winning CCOY.
4/15/2006 8:32 AM
BMill did pull it off, but you are the one who beat DeSales.
Just a quick chart on my predictions:
PG - Matney. Was 2nd team.
SG - Sliva. Bingo.
SF - Crain. Was 2nd team.
PF - Cozart. Was ineligible 2nd semester.
C - Fermin. Bingo.
POY - Fermin. Yes.
COY - BMill. Yes.
ROY - McCann. No. But I still send him Valentines.

Catholic has never had a first team performer in my reign of terror.

Andrew, very impressive offseason work. A question for you - is offseason progress purely a product of WE and luck, or is there another element. My guys with comparable WE's tended to do worse than yours.
