I'd play in an OL again if I had a guarantee it would be like that!

We all know about the cookie blight, but I think the PA/IP minimums also killed a lot of the fun there.  It seemed like once every couple of OLs you'd run into a team that drafted 6 200K pitchers and spent the rest on offense.  Good times!

So what you are saying is that a lot of people draft Derek Jeter for their teams because the advantages of having him in the lineup outweigh the negatives right?

contrarian23, so who was the pitcher in the one game that kept Ruth from hitting a homer to keep him at only 161 (as in 161st Street - those what's know know of what's I refer).

IS THIS THE BEST WIS PITCHER SEASON EVER?

MLB112008 Space Age Progressive - Warren Spahn 1953 ended the regular season at 34-1 with a 1.65 ERA.

Is this the best WIS pitcher season ever for a $4.3M pitcher?

Jimmy Carter Prog, 2008 season.  Randy Johnson (salary of $4,307,688 and ERC+ 115) goes 20-4 during the regular season with an ERA of 4.17.

But wait, 45-year-old Johnson's not even winded yet!

In the post-season he leads his team to a World Series championship -- including 6 shutout innings and a W in game 7 -- while compiling a record of 5-0 and an ERA of 1.49!

Some More Clutch Hitting

25 games into another Random Captain season ($90M theme) and the league-wide batting line looks like this:

.267/.331/.385/.716

1922 Marty McManus leads the league in RBI with 30.  This despite a batting line that is below average across the board:

.232/.263/.384/.647

I see from the Recent Champs listing that ligapelota just won his 200th championship.  That's more than you* and me put together.

* Unless your name is elbirdo, ARomano or dougpalm.  In which case, we kick ligapelota's butt!

Can you guess how many games up this team is?

I've got a 1930 prog team that's currently in the Top 25.  66 games in and we're 47-19.  We've got the top 4 MVP vote getters, as well as the 1-3-4 leading Cy Young candidates.

How many games up are we?

We're one game back!

A Tale of Two Streaks

140 games into an OL season.  Two teams battling it out for a wild card.  Team A is 79-61, Team B is 77-63.

Both teams lose game 141.

Team A keeps on losing -- 11 more in a row, and drops to 79-73.

Team B?  They've won 11 in a row and now sit at 88-64.

Worst. Error. Ever.

Lead off hitter gets on via error. Next batter flies out. Then a single, and a walk. Then the fifth batter makes an out, what should have been the third out.

At this point, no runs have been scored yet. Bases are loaded, two outs. And all hell is about to break loose...

Oof! 13 unearned 1st inning runs!

Dixey Walker's first AB in the inning could have been an inning-ending double play. He made a FC out 3-2. Why didn't the catcher throw back to first to end the inning?

And Johnny Mize walked twice. Some half inning !

Two more innings...

The first is from a 1930 prog, where my team is battling for a playoff spot.  This 9th inning collapse dropped us out of a tie for the division (note that none of my three pitchers are mops or fatigued or even in any way below average -- all have an ERC+ of 120 or better and ERC# between 3.22 and 3.61):

"Forget it, Jake.  It's 1930-town."

And in this one, Sparky removes my starting pitcher Jack Coombs from the game with two outs in the 9th while he's going for a shutout:

No complaints, though.  You can never be too careful with a 64-run lead!

c'mon that second one is a typo ! No way. And how do you get 64 runs on 48 hits? Who was pitching for the other team (don't draft him !). Sparky wanted to get Coombs some needed rest for a game on the line instead. It is the only part of this that makes sense.
