Colorado is our lone team left. You are reading this because you are looking for another team.
Here are some facts to consider:
1) this team can be rid of
all major contracts except Derrick Borders' after the season ends.
2) There are several solid pieces in place that you can either build on or use as trade chips to bring additional prospects.
3) The last Four seasons of drafts this team had two first round picks each year. That has provided some solid prospects in the system.
Arb eligible
Travis Daniels is only 26 years of age. His
.290 average, 47 HRs and 110 RBIs make him a solid piece of any lineup. 27 year old
Stefen Nicolino is another young star. His
.317 average is backed up by solid power numbers with
39 HRs and 94 RBIs. Veterans
Sammy Maxwell (
51 HRs 112 RBIs and a .295 average) and 30 year old
Derrek Borders (
31 HRs 105 RBIs and a .278 average allow you the flexibility to build or trade. No less then 8 first round picks were selected in the past four seasons. Two were traded away, but the six who remain are either on the Big League roster or poised to join soon. One of them,
Doc Loney is already making an impact in the field. His growth shows no sign of stopping and you can expect improvement at the plate in his second ML season. Three others are on the ML staff. Starter
Joey Ruth and RP
Aaron Humphries could be joined by
Chin-Hui Martin this season. The other first round selections were position players
D.T. Everidge and
Gregg Reid. With a solid Spring camp. Reid may be ready to contribute the Big league squad this season. Everidge is probably three seasons away.
The bottom line ? The contract obligations are very small this season and get down to one major contract next season. Control of all those contracts means you have the flexibility to either pick up some players and compete right now or trade away key pieces and work your own rebuild. Let Santa put a little something in
your stocking this year, and get started building that WS champ you always wanted.
