1 Season in d3
Cherry Pick a loaded d2 team, if you do REALLY well I think you can get to D1 in 1 season but it usually takes 2 seasons of high success
Take over a bad D1 team in an empty conference, Make the NT year 1 and 2 as  CT auto and then year 3 and 4 win multiple games in the NT
You can be eligible for bad Big 6 team in 6-8 seasons.

that's the fastest way for a guy who isn't new to the game, who already has the mastery to pull off those very quick jumps.

zorzii, you basically want to move up to d2 relatively quickly, into a conference that is pretty competitive. you want to stay there until making the NT every season is easy, where your top teams are at least starting to compete for an outside spot in the top 10, or something like that. otherwise, when you get to low d1, you will be stuck there forever. it is very unforgiving in low d1 and you don't want to rush there. also, staying at d2 longer will allow you to jump to a better d1 job, which will help soften the learning curve a bit. d1 recruiting is drastically different than d2/d3, so you will still struggle when you first get there, like the rest of us did (myself included). but the coaching, most of that translates. thing is, there are so many d1 coaches who have or had high quality, a/a+ prestige type d2/d3 programs, that if you can't get your program up that high, you are going to be behind both on coaching and on recruiting, and that is a dangerous place to be.

in short, the fastest way to get to BCS d1 is to succeed in d2 before moving to d1... and how long that takes, is different for everybody. if you have multiple teams and want to move one up to start learning d1 recruiting, that would be a good idea too, as long as you aren't abandoning your only competitive club.
