It's pretty simple.

Bama has a top 10 recruiting class since, oh I don't know, forever.
Saban is one of the best coaches in college football.
So, in a reasonable mind, where does that put them?

In the top 4.

And, for the record, I don't like Bama or Saban.   I just know what I know.
but that all applies to quite a few teams, which you don't give the benefit of the doubt to. It just seems you are ignoring the actual games, which seems like a silly way to determine who the best teams are.
No, I saw the games.   Better athletes, better coach, execution not so good.    That can be fixed.    I'm speculating that it will be by December.

hard to justify MSU being ranked higher than Oregon to me

Maybe they are doing what Mike is doing and projecting forward and disregarding the actual results to date.

They are 1 point ahead.   Not sure there's much significance in it.

Bama looked pretty good, no?

Texas S+M GOT WHIPPED

1.  Miss St - off
2.  FSU - won a close one against ND.   Probably locked down a playoff spot as they have no threats on the schedule.
3.  Ole Miss - beat TN convincingly.   Big deal.
4.  Baylor - upset by WV.  Teams with no D are bound to lose eventually.
5   Notre Dame - played well in Tallahassee.   Better than I gave them credit for.
6.  Auburn - off
7.  Bama - destroyed TAMU.
8.  MSU - beat Indiana.   Whoopdeedo.
9.  Oregon - handled Washington.
10. Georgia - let Ark make it look closer than it was.
11. Oklahoma - lost by 1 to KSU.  Done.
12. TCU - Beat up Okie St.   Loss to Baylor really hurts now.

My top 4 hasn't changed.

FSU, Bama, Oregon, Miss St.

On the outside looking in:  Ole Miss, ND, GA, MSU, Auburn

FSU - only Louisville could pose a threat.   And only because Petrino is a very good offensive coach.
Bama - Miss St and Auburn at home.   I expect them to win out.
Oregon - Stanford at home, Utah on the road.  I expect them to win out.
Miss St - Bama and Ole Miss on the road.   The Ole Miss game might be an elimination game.

Ole Miss - Auburn and Miss St at home.   0-2 or maybe they get by Auburn.
ND - AZ St and USC on the road, Louisville at home.   Could play their way in by winning out.
Auburn - At Ole Miss, GA and Bama.   Tough road but, if they win out, there's no way they're not in.
GA - Auburn at home.  Depending on what happens with the teams ahead of them, I can see them sneaking in with 2 losses.
MSU - Ohio St at home.   Lots of things have to happen for them to get in but it's possible.

As a side note, I'm not sure FSU is one of the 4 best but, if they go undefeated, they're going to be in.  ND handled them in Tallahassee.   Winston had an incredible 2nd half to make the difference.   And ND could have still won if not for a poor decision on a pick play.

STILL SUCKS

Shocker.   The Bama haters disappear after they steamroll TAMU.
