Incidentally, I have taught college since 1992. I have heard EVERY excuse in the book and a few from outside it (they got websites and social media now) for why assignments can't be turned in, exams can't be taken, papers are late etc.
I have always been pretty lenient, and don't really usually care all that much about deadlines unless it is going to seriously increase my workload - like I will have to miss Christmas with my family because you all turned in your papers late at the end of the semester, etc.
But for the past 4 or 5 years I have been - among other colleges - teaching for a school that provides courses for US military people overseas and their families. Ever since I got apologetic requests to turn work in late by people ready to accept whatever penalty I saw fit but who needed to turn work in late because they had been wounded in battle in Iraq or Afghanistan, my standard for excuses went way up. I have told this to the students at other colleges where I have taught - it better be good, cause my standard is the guy who emailed me from the hospital in Iraq having been hit by an IED that his jeep went over and was worried about losing his leg.
So I am cool with changing rules, but the my standards are a little higher than the Supreme Court's are. Any questions?
