The Talkin' Baseball progressive league started in the 1950 season with 12 teams.  We expanded to 16 teams for the 1958 season and expanded to 20 teams for the 1969 season.  We are now looking to expand to 24 teams for the 1977 season.

As of this date (November 15th, 2014) we are finishing the 1974 regular season.  We'll be looking for the 4 expansion owners to be involved shortly after the 1976 season is underway, which will probably be around early to mid February 2015.  We'll hold the expansion draft while the 1976 season plays out.  The expansion teams will also participate in the 1977 rookie draft with the current teams.  Details of how we are handling the expansion draft, etc. is at the bottom of this thread.  You'll likely be playing ball sometime in April 2015.

Keeping the above datelines in mind, we are looking for 4 courageous owners to take on an expansion team.  As of 11/21/14, we already have four owners penciled in.  We are collecting names of interested owners, and when we get closer to the expansion draft I'll check in with the owners who have shown interest to confirm that they remain committed to taking on an expansion team.  It will be first come, first served, though I will exercise the right to turn away any owner who knowingly has a bad reputation on WIS.  Send me a sitemail if you are interested, and I'll reply appropriately.  Thanks for looking here!  Details of our long standing, stable league are below.

The Talkin' Baseball league is a fairly standard, single season progressive:
  • Alternate WIS Format F (4 divisions, 5 teams in each. Division winners make playoffs. Each playoff series best of seven).
  • No DH
  • Injuries on
  • No live play
  • Unlimited IR
  • No salary cap
  • 6/2 below average AAA players, randomly generated (6 bats, 2 arms). No restrictions on AAA use.
  • Full/combined/partial seasons of players are all eligible to be used.
  • Trading of draft picks allowed up to one season in advance.
  • We have a 48 hour add/drop period after each draft.

We absolutely do not condone tanking games in this league.  This has never been an issue here and the league takes great pride in that.  Eyes are always watching, and even the appearance of tanking games can lead to dismissal from the league, period.  If you play progressive leagues using this strategy, then you aren't welcome here.  If you want to play in a league where everyone is trying to do their best regardless of what their roster looks like in any given season, then please choose us!

A three-tier lotto system is used to determine next season's first round draft order after 120 games.  6 worst teams get put in lotto for picks 1 through 6 in next season's draft.  Next 7 teams get put in a lotto for picks 7 through 13. And the 7 teams with the best record after 120 games into the season are put in a lotto for picks 14-20. Lotto is for the first round of the draft only. Subsequent rounds are worst team to best team, based on record at 120 games into the current season.  Edit: we will be changing to a four tier lotto beginning in the 1978 season once we have expanded to 24 teams.  There will be 6 teams in each of the tiers 6/6/6/6.

We have some additional cool features in this league.  You have the ability to shuffle players up and down from AAA virtually all season (deadline is before game 160 of the season).  Typically not a lot of down time between seasons.  On average, we are starting the next season about one week after the World Series concludes.  We have a league record book that is updated each season and we also have a Hall of Fame for the league!  There is also a franchise history thread in our private forum where you can learn who the previous owners of your franchise were, along with all of the prior team names and a championship/pennant/playoff appearances count.

Important:  We attempt to keep things moving at a semi-brisk pace. We start drafting off the clock not too long after the 120 game mark at a leisurely pace. Once the playoffs start, we draft on the clock and pick up wherever we are in the draft at that point. We attempt to keep down time to a minimum between seasons, as we usually finish the draft around the same time that the World Series is finishing up.  So keep in mind when considering our league that we move faster than the typical progressive, which may suit you very well or not so well.

A two-tier lotto system to determine next season's first round draft order after 120 games. 8 worst teams get put in lotto for picks 1 through 8 in next season's draft, 8 best teams get put in lotto for picks 9 through 16. As you read this, we are talking about expanding from 16 to 20 teams in the future. This won't happen before 1969. The goal is to have an expansion plan in place within a week or three.

1977 Expansion Plan

We will soon be recruiting 4 courageous owners who want the challenge of taking on an expansion team.  Sitemail me if you are interested.  We will hold the expansion draft shortly after the 1976 season begins, which should be around February 2015.  The 1977 season will likely commence in April 2015.

Current teams will donate 1 or 2 players to the expansion draft.  Each current team would have to comply with ONE of the five options below:

1 - one 180+ IP pitcher
2 - two pitchers with 200+ combined IP
3 - one position player with 500+ plate appearances
4 - two position players with 600+ combined plate appearances
5 - one 90+ IP pitcher and one positional player with 400+ PA's

Expansion draft will be 22 rounds (21 players + ballpark).  Expansion draft will include the current team donations from above, players not drafted after the 1976 draft, and 8 specific players held back from the 1975 and 1976 drafts.

Here are the 8 players that will be held back from the 1975 and 1976 drafts and will be made available in the expansion draft: SS Doug Flynn, OF Mike Vail, 3B Phil Mankowski, OF Jerry Turner, P Dave Heaverlo, P Gene Pentz, P Bob Myrick, and P Rick Sawyer.

Expansion teams will have 21 players after the expansion draft.  Expansion teams will post their keeper list just like the current owners.  Expansion teams will participate in the regular 1977 draft along with current owners.  Expansion teams will each get TWO picks in the first round and TWO picks each in the second round.  The expansion teams will hold the top eight picks (two per expansion team) in each of the first 2 rounds.   Expansion teams will hold the top four picks (one pick per expansion team) starting in round three and each round thereafter.

Expansion from 20 to 24 teams will create six divisions with 4 teams in each division. There will be 6 division winners and 2 wild card teams that will make the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs (League Divisional Series or LDS) will be best of five series. LCS and WS matches will remain best of 7 series. The four expansion teams will be placed in 4 different divisions.  Two expansion teams will go in the NL and two in the AL.  The expansion teams will be required to stay in the same ballpark/city for a minimum of three seasons.

In 1977 only, we will do a 6/4 AAA split (6 hitters as normal, but 4 pitchers instead of 2). AVERAGE AAA players in 1977.  In 1978 and beyond, the plan will be to return to below average AAA, and with a 6/2 split.

Note:  The expansion teams will be allowed to make the top 8 draft picks (2 per expansion team) from the 1977 rookie class before the expansion draft begins.
