Letang To Miss At Least Six Weeks After Having A Stroke

Friday, 02.07.2014 / 11:35 AM / News

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will miss at least six weeks after having a stroke last week, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manger Ray Shero.

The condition is treatable with blood thinners and at this point is not believed to be career threatening.

Further testing also revealed that Letang, 26, has had a very small hole in the wall of his heart since birth. This small defect in the wall is present in all individuals before birth but seals shut in most people. It is possible that the hole in the heart led to the stroke.

“Kris had one brief episode of dizziness and nausea last week,” Shero said. “We held him out of the Los Angeles game Thursday night, and when he continued to feel ill, tests conducted in Phoenix on Saturday gave us the first indication of his condition. Further testing then was conducted when he returned to Pittsburgh, and he continued to undergo a battery of tests here this week.”

Not looking good for ex-Pen Ryan Malone. From TSN today:

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Ryan Malone was arrested early Saturday morning for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine, according to a report in the Tampa Bay Times.

"We are aware of the situation concerning Ryan Malone this morning," Lightning GM Steve Yzerman said in a statement released later Saturday morning. "Ryan will not travel with the team to Washington today, but beyond that we cannot comment further at this time."

Malone didn't play in Tampa Bay's 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday, his third straight game listed as a healthy scratch.

In 57 games with the Lightning this year the 34-year-old has five goals and 15 points.

Bylsma and Shero gone. Bylsma was a joke who may or may not have trouble landing another NHL job. Shero is rumored to already be the Caps next GM. His drafts have sucked and he has totally hung us by our jocks with the salary cap. Signing Letang was a poor choice, and we are hung with Scuderi's contract for another 3 years.

Wow! All the speculation and Bylsma is still (technically) employed by the Pens. Get rid of the stiff now and move on. Why delay the inevitable? Allow him to look for a new head coaching job while there are still openings.
